Cy’s Song comes from the character Cyrus Kleiner, the nanotechnologist in the comic fantasy The Pastry Chef, the Nanotechnologist, the Aerobics Instructor and the Plumber, by celebrated author, Eugene Mirabelli.

Here, Cy tells us how he met Samantha Giardino at a conference on Nature and Technology. Cy is a scientist who thinks highly of himself, the rules of physics, and the field of nanotechnology – a discipline dealing with extraordinarily small bits of matter. Samantha, on the other hand, is a pastry chef who thinks little of herself and believes her job is trivial and unimportant. She’s easy going and easily impressed by the nanotechnologist. Story and lyrics by Eugene Mirabelli, music by Brett L. Wery.

This 8 minute song has the feel of an opera scene and is ideal as recital repertoire. The baritone part is demanding yet poignant funny at times. The string quartet parts are suitable for college or professional players. It could be performed with the piano accompaniment (included).

All the movements of Four World Variants are based on one theme. The theme proper can be heard in the fugue subject of the first movement. The second movement uses the theme in retrograde inversion (backwards and upside down) to emulate the music of Gagaku. Gagaku literally translates as elegant music and is the ancient imperial court music of Japan. The third movement uses the theme in retrograde (simply backwards) to create a sarabande. Sarabandes are typically associated with the dance suites of the Baroque era but are said to have originated in Central and North America. The Sarabande was banned for a time in 16th  century Spain for it’s lascivious nature. The final movement uses the original form of the theme combined with a traditional drumming pattern of the Ewe people of Togo, Benin, and Ghana, West Africa.

An Avaloch Divertimento was begun-in fact the first two movements were completed-at the Avaloch Farm Music Institute in New Hampshire. Avaloch or Abhlach, is from the old Irish word meaning, place of the apple trees. The sacred Isle of the Apple Trees, Avalon-where Arthur, King of the Britons, was taken to be healed of his dreadful wounds-takes its name from this ancient word. Avaloch Farm Music Institute (AFMI) in New Hampshire is also a magical place where chamber music groups come to work and create in an atmosphere free from the distractions of everyday life. In the summer of 2021 I had the pleasure and honor of being a resident of AFMI along with Areli Mendoza-Pannone, Robert Frazier, and Mark Evans as we work-shopped my song cycle, Quarry Songs. Areli, Bobby, and Mark had to go back to the real world half way through the residency, leaving me at AFMI to begin work on An Avaloch Divertimento.

The first movement is an Aubade, which are traditionally morning love songs-as opposed to evening love songs or serenades. In the seventeenth century aubades became associated with instrumental works depicting sunrises. It is this sense of the word that is used here, complete with a bird-song oboe cadenza.

Pippin takes its name from a variety of apple. While at AFMI I would take afternoon walks through the nearby apple orchard to beautiful Walker Pond. It was on one of these walks that I came up with the first draft of the tune used in the central fughetta of the movement. The word, pippin is also included in Carolyn Forché’s poem, The Museum of Stones, which I had set as the final movement of Quarry Songs.

The final movement, Amhrán, means song in Irish and is a simple song form with three interwoven themes that emulate the Irish Bodhran (frame drum), fiddle, and singer.

Samuel Detweiler is a superb musician and accomplished saxophonist, equally at home in both jazz and classical idioms. Naturally, I was thrilled when Sam told me of his plans to commission a work that incorporated improvisation in what would otherwise be a neo-classical sonata form. The result is a piece that is technically demanding for most classical saxophonists but also requires a reasonable amount of proficiency in improvisation. Much of classical music is driven by development (the restatement, fragmentation, exploitation, evolution, and eventual transformation of musical ideas). In this sonata much of the development is left to the performer. The first movement is in sonata allegro form with the development being largely improvised. The second movement leaves one entire statement of the form open for improvisation much like any jazz standard. The third movement is a sonata rondo, again, leaving the development section open for improvisation.

This 17 minute piece is ideal for college and professional players.
