Composed by John Bull. Arranged by James M. Guthrie. Chamber,Early Music,Historic,Religious,Renaissance. 12 pages. Jmsgu3 #874502. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.1283308).

Fitzwilliam Virginal Book, XXXVIII.
John Bull was an English composer, organist, virginalist, and organ builder who lived from 1562/63 to 1628. He was educated as a chorister of the Chapel Royal in London and later became a doctor of music at the universities of both Oxford and Cambridge. Bull was one of the most famous composers of keyboard music of the early 17th century, and most of his compositions were written for the virginal, a keyboard instrument popular in the Renaissance period. He was known for his outstanding technical ability and keyboard virtuosity, and his music is distinguished by unfailing resourcefulness in devising new musical ideas. Bull's reputation rests on his extensive compositions for virginals and organ, some 150 extant pieces published in Musica Britannica. He was also one of the contributors to Parthenia, a collection of keyboard music published in 1611. Bull wrote an anthem, God the Father, God the Son, for the 1613 wedding of the princess and the Elector Palatine, in addition to his keyboard compositions, verse anthems, canons, and other works. Bull's music ranked among the foremost composers along with Byrd, Gibbons, and Tomkins.

John Bull had several contemporaries who were also prominent composers during the Renaissance period. Some of these composers include:

William Byrd: Byrd was an English composer and one of the most influential figures in English Renaissance music. He was a contemporary of John Bull and is considered one of the greatest composers of his time. Byrd's compositions include sacred choral music, keyboard works, and consort music.

Orlando Gibbons: Gibbons was an English composer and organist who lived during the same period as John Bull. He was known for his sacred choral music, particularly his anthems and verse anthems. Gibbons' compositions are characterized by their expressive harmonies and intricate counterpoint.

Thomas Tomkins: Tomkins was another English composer who was active during the same time as John Bull. He was known for his sacred choral music, including anthems and services. Tomkins' compositions are notable for their rich harmonies and expressive melodies.

Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck: Sweelinck was a Dutch composer and organist who was highly regarded during the Renaissance period. He was known for his keyboard music, particularly his variations and fantasias. Sweelinck's compositions had a significant influence on Bull and other composers of the time.

These composers, along with John Bull, were influential figures in the development of Renaissance music and significantly contributed to the repertoire of keyboard and choral music during that era.

Composed by Stanley P. Hung. Contemporary,Holiday. 19 pages. Stanley P. Hung #6495927. Published by Stanley P. Hung (A0.1024840).

Inspire Infinite Potential is the first original composition of Stanley P. Hung. It was composed for the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Concert Band 70th Anniversary in 2019. MIT Concert Band was founded by students in fall of 1948 and directed for 51 years by conductor John D. Corley. He directed the band from its inception in 1948 until his retirement last spring in 1999. Dr. Thomas E. Reynolds continued the job of music education at MITCB up to now about 20 years. He is the current music director and conducting the band together with co-conductor Collin Myers. (Reference: band.mit.edu)

Mr. Hung had participated in a few public performances of MIT Concert Band and played trombone. His footprints not only appeared at MIT in Cambridge, but also in New York (2013), Maine (2014), and Philadelphia (2019) during spring tours. To come up with an idea by our originality then take it into practice was the spirit inspired by such ingenuity group. Therefore, Stanley tried to add this spirit into the music work Inspire Infinite Potential at creation stage. Its U.S. premiere was conducted by Dr. Reynolds and performed by the MIT Concert Band in campus (2019.12.10). The second edition is mostly based on the previous version. Some of notes, chords, articulations, and rhythms have been updated.

Composed by Burton Goldstein. 20th Century,Contemporary,Sacred,Spiritual. Octavo. 24 pages. Burton Goldstein Music #5001051. Published by Burton Goldstein Music (A0.1035265).

In setting the Lord's Prayer to music, I looked up what Jesus said to his followers about how the Prayer should be said.

In the Cambridge translation of the Gospel of Matthew, Jesus says: When thou prayest enter into thy closet...pray to thy Father which is in secret. Do not send a trumpet before thee.... Do not pray ostentatiously with vain repetition.

I was surprised at this image of the Lord’s Prayer; perhaps I had Handel's Messiah and sound the trumpets and a huge congregation in the back of my mind. I became intrigued with the image of a man facing his God secretly, in an absolutely solitary and personal way.

In this piece, the style of singing should be closely related to this style of praying. The performance should emphasize the quiet, meditative quality of the piece. The harmonic language I made for this piece is meant to convey a mysterious, mystical feeling, a feeling of intense inward concentration, in part conveyed by the close spacing of the chords at the beginning and the single, common tone that runs through these chords.

This concentration leads to a sense of transcendence, in part created by the opening up of the close spacing especially beginning at m.26 and culminating in the floating section at m.38.

I did not repeat any of the text, except the final Amen.
