Carillon,Instrumental Solo - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.944197 Composed by Scott R. Hummel. Classical,Contemporary. Individual part. 7 pages. Scott R. Hummel Music #6873653. Published by Scott R. Hummel Music (A0.944197). Two Impressions of the Sky presents contrasting movements, Twilight and Storm. With cascading seventh chords and a hymn-like melody, Twilight reflects a peaceful evening as the last sunlight fades into a star-studded night sky. Storm opens with swirling fourths and a dramatic melody in the bass. The whirling winds of the trebles are frequently broken by musical thunder in the bass and an ascending lightning motif-the storm lulls and surges, reaching a rapid and dramatic finale. Scott R. Hummel is a composer and musician from Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. Scott holds a Bachelor of Arts in Music and a Bachelor of Music in Audio and Music Production from Lebanon Valley College in Annville, Pennsylvania. He has performance experience in keyboard instruments, choral music, and percussion. His introduction to the carillon came through listening to the 62-bell instrument housed in the Chimes Tower at Longwood Gardens, Kennett Square, Pennsylvania. Scott also serves as an instructor for the North American Carillon School where he teaches music theory. In addition to carillon, Scott has written for various other mediums, including choir, pipe organ, and percussion. His involvement in the music industry extends beyond composition and performance to audio engineering and lighting design. Scott continues to compose and arrange new works for carillon. Brass Quintet Horn,Trombone,Trumpet,Tuba - Digital Download SKU: A0.1468129 Composed by F. Leslie Smith. Arranged by F. Leslie Smith. 19th Century,Chamber,Folk,Historic,Traditional. 49 pages. Sweetwater Brass Press #1046440. Published by Sweetwater Brass Press (A0.1468129). In 1856 Joseph P. Webster, a Wisconsin songwriter, met Henry D.L. Webster (no relation), formerly the minister of Zanesville, Ohio’s Universalist Church.  Joseph was in the process of writing a song but needed lyrics to go with his melody.  Henry obliged by writing a longish poem about the love of his life, Ella Blocksom.  She had been his fiancée, but the engagement had been broken and, apparently, so had Henry’s heart.  Joseph’s melody needed a name that would fit into a three-note phrase, so “Ella” was changed to “Lorena.”  Chicago’s Higgins Brothers published the song in 1857, and it became widely popular.  When the American Civil war broke out, “Lorena” was beloved by both Union and Confederate soldiers as they thought of the wives and girlfriends they had left behind.       J.P. Webster’s “Lorena” is beautiful and plaintive. It is no wonder that this song has remained a sentimental favorite over the years and is still performed and recorded.  In this composition, “Lorena: A Brass Quintet Setting,” the “Lorena” tune has been expanded and transformed to create additional melodies that enhance and complement the original.  You’ll find it a pleasure to play and a real crowd pleaser for audiences.     This composition is 201 measures in length.  It begins in the key of E-flat, transitions to B-flat at section C (measure 51) and goes to F at section G (measure 141).  Initial tempo marking is Adagio, increasing to Moderato at section C.  There are a number of temporary tempo variations and fermata marks, and the last 9 measures are characterized by a gradual slowing.     The introduction is 21 measures in length.  It leads to the second section, which consists of a plain, simple and straightforward statement of J.P. Webster’s “Lorena” theme, complete with grace notes and gruppetto.  In this section, Horn and Trumpet 1 do the honors, eventually joined by Tuba, and it should be played with great expression.       At section C, tempo then picks up, and the arrangement presents a series of explications of the theme in various styles.       The final section, I (measure 179), reprises most of the variations and ends with a partial reiteration of the “Lorena” theme.     Performance time is about eight minutes, forty seconds.  Tuba plays several notes near the top of its scale; otherwise, all notes are within the normal playing range of each instrument.     The composer, Les Smith, will be happy to provide substitute parts (for example, treble clef baritone for trombone) at no charge.  He would like to receive your suggestions, comments, corrections and criticisms.  Contact him at lessmith61@bellsouth.net.  For more arrangements by Les, enter Sweetwater Brass Press (without the quotation marks) in the Sheet Music Plus or Sheet Music Direct search box.

Solo Guitar - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1153109 Composed by Franz Xaver Gruber. Arranged by Richard Hirsch. Christmas,Multicultural,Religious,Standards,Traditional,World. Individual part. 8 pages. Richard Hirsch #753352. Published by Richard Hirsch (A0.1153109). An arrangement for solo guitar of the all-time favourite Christmas carol composed by Franz Gruber. The arrangement starts with an introduction of the melody in arpeggios of natural harmonics and moves into broken chords mixed with arpeggios for the first rendering of the song in 6/8 time. In the second part, at the shift to 4/4 time, the melody is rendered in an African inspired version with natural harmonics reminiscent of tunes played on an African kalimba (thumb harp) woven into the broken chords and arpeggios. As the speed increases, and the volume decreases, the arrangement moves steadily toward a total kalimba version. I like to think of the first part of the arrangement as symbolising a night in the little Austrian village where Gruber lived and composed the song. The natural harmonics and base notes and treble notes on open strings denoting the village chapel bells ringing on Christmas Eve. The second part tries to give a feel for how the melody can stand as a symbol of our common human origins in Africa, celebrating the birth and unity of humanity. The arrangement is within reach of intermediate to advanced students of guitar and is a good introduction to natural harmonics on the twelfth, seventh, and fifth frets. The African inspired polyrhythm fingerpicking in the second part consists basically of the thumb alternating with the index and middle fingers in a repetitive cycle. The second part is notated in 4/4 time, but can perhaps be more easily be read and played as 8/8 time, as practically everything, especially towards the end of the arrangement consists of eight notes. The polyrhythmic second part should have an accent on the downbeat of the first beat of the measure followed by an accent at 3and (an upbeat), just before the fourth and final beat of the measure. Reading the four part harmony of the score may at first present a challenge but if played basically as eight notes followed by eight notes everything should come out right in the end. Refer to the mp3 version provided with the score if in doubt. I do not mark the natural harmonics explicitly in the tablature, there are simply too many of them. The diamond shaped notes in the notation denoting harmonics are found directly above the corresponding fingerings in the tablature. It has been a real joy to work with this arrangement of the song and I hope it brings joy to others in playing it, giving new life to the traditional melody.

Mezzo-soprano, tenor, bass, mixed choir and orchestra - Digital Download SKU: S9.Q23952 Opera for the concert stage. Composed by Rodion Shchedrin. This edition: vocal/piano score. Downloadable, vocal/piano score. Duration 85 minutes. Schott Music - Digital #Q23952. Published by Schott Music - Digital (S9.Q23952). Russian.Shchedrin's concert opera 'The Enchanted Wanderer' has quickly taken a permanent place in the musical canon. Now the piano score of the successful and impressive work is being published. Deep Slavonic emotions and gripping virtuosity characterize both this piece and many other compositions by Shchedrin. Even if he has been a cosmopolitan for a long time, the Moscow-born composer nevertheless remains an originally Russian composer whose attachment to Russian music folklore and poetry has never been broken off. The text of this 'opera for the concert stage' is based on a legend by the great Russian narrator Nikolay S. Leskov and tells the story of an enchanted pilgrim. The dramatic action is told by three vocal soloists, large choir and orchestra in colourful musical pictures.2 (auch Altfl. u. Picc.) · 2 Blfl. · 2 (2. auch Engl. Orchestra - Digital Download SKU: S9.Q19130 Composed by John Casken. This edition: study score. Music Of Our Time. Downloadable, Study score. Duration 20 minutes. Schott Music - Digital #Q19130. Published by Schott Music - Digital (S9.Q19130). My Concerto for Orchestra (2007) is a twenty-minute work in which different sections of the orchestra, as well as individual solos and duos from within the orchestra, are highlighted as the music unfolds. The work continues my interest in two-movement forms that began with my Cello Concerto (1991), and was later developed in Sortilège (1996) and Symphony (Broken Consort) (2004). In these works, and in the Concerto for Orchestra, each movement is given equal weight and importance with the second developing earlier material and taking it in new directions. The two-movement form of the Concerto for Orchestra derives from a symphonic sonata structure, reshaping the traditional four-movement form and combining this with aspects of sonata form, a tradition that goes back to Liszt, Schoenberg and Sibelius: 1st movement (i) exposition of ideas - dramatic and sudden (ii) scherzo and development 1 - resolute 2nd movement (iii) adagio - calm and unhurried (iv) development 2 with recapitulation - intense and energetic The Concerto for Orchestra was commissioned by the Musikalische Akademie des Nationaltheatre-Orchesters Mannheim with the support of Die Landesbank Baden-Württemberg for its first two performances on 31st March and 1st April 2008 conducted by Friedemann Layer. The score is dedicated in friendship and admiration to Ronald Zollman.
