After releasing two EPs, Did You Hear the Rain? in November 2013 and Cassy O' in March 2014, Ezra rose to prominence with the release of his hit single, Budapest, which reached number one in several countries. His debut studio album, Wanted on Voyage, was released in June 2014, reaching number one in the UK and the top ten in seven other countries. It was also the third best-selling album of 2014 in the UK.His second studio album, Staying at Tamara's, was released in March 2018 and reached number one in the UK and the top ten in eight other countries. Published by Schott Music - Digital (S9.Q6602). The Hungarian composer István Szelényi (1904-1972) studied composition with Zoltán Kodály and later taught at the Conservatoire of Budapest. He wrote primarily chamber and piano music. His hitherto unpublished Sonata for oboe and piano was written in 1969 and constitutes an important contribution to the rather small 20th-century oboe repertoire. The one-movement sonata is composed in free tonality and thrives on charming rhythmic turns borrowed from Hungarian folk music.

Jeno Hubay, Head of the Violin Dept at the Budapest Academy of Music, wrote this piece to be as light and celebratory as a perfect spring day. My arrangement abridges and slightly simplifies this classical standard. I reduced it from 6 1/2 minutes to 2 1/2 minutes by focusing on the recapitulation of the main theme but also included opening and closing cadenzas. Most of the expression markings are my own additions. I have scored it as an Instrumental Solo with an Organ accompaniment but a Piano accompaniment could be easily adapted from this. These pieces have been transcribed from arrangements for flute and guitar. Bela Bartok, considered one of the 20th century’s most important composers, was born in Hungary in 1881. A prodigy, he was a professor at the Budapest Music Academy by the age of 26. His interest in traditional music led him to make many journeys (with his colleague Zolta Kodaly) through Hungary, Romania and Slovakia collecting songs and dances, the styles of which were synthesised into compositions of his own. He emigrated to the USA in 1940 where he died five years later of leukaemia. The pieces are deceptively simple, and it would be a mistake to take their natural forms, clear melodies, tonal harmonies and strong rhythms as an invitation to play inattentively. Quite the contrary. They stand any amount of playing, but only when the composing is heeded, the dynamics observed, and modulations anticipated.
