Legendary Italian tenor Beniamino Gigl,i who championed this tune, sang it in his 1935 film of the same name where he plays an opera singer. “Don’t forget about me, my life is tied to you…� is a great piece of musical bravado for many a tenor. Bach scored the motet for double choir. It was probably composed for a funeral, as others of his motets but exact dates of composition and performance are not known. It is his only motet without biblical text. He set a poem by Paul Thymich, which Johann Schelle set as a funeral aria in 1684. Also unusually, the motet is not closed by a chorale, but by an aria which is harmonized like a chorale. The work has been described as having a confident, intimate and tender character, and making more use of polychorality (interplay of the two choirs) than polyphony (interplay of the voices), containing no fugue. The theme of the text is death as the happy moment when man, tired of earthly life, can confide in Jesus, who is seen as Truth and Life and the only way to eternal life. From my in-progress collection of intermediate and late-intermediate piano compositions in Impressionist styles, this is an homage to Maurice Ravel's piano writing as shown in pieces including the Sonatine, Le tombeau de Couperin, and others.It introduces techniques that Ravel frequently uses but that less-than-advanced students rarely encounter in repertoire at their level: sometimes-awkward hand and arm crossings, extended tertian chords (9th/11th/13th voicings), whole tone sonorities, and some modal writing, to name a few, while still maintaining a clarity of voicing that students will find in Ravel's own music. All of these can be disorienting to students encountering Ravel's music for the first time, so students will benefit from Ravel-preparatory repertoire, like this piece, that introduces these techniques.Since most currently published collections of Impressionist-style pedagogical repertoire focus on Claude Debussy's language, this piece is a welcome addition to the student piano literature and will help bridge the gaps between standard teaching repertoire and pieces like Ravel's Sonatine, while also exposing students to a new, rich, and inviting tonal language that will inspire them to seek out more of Ravel's compositions.On a more personal level, this piece was also inspired by my main non-music hobby: raising and releasing butterflies. An upcoming relocation will allow me to build my own butterfly garden in my new home, and I can't wait to create my own butterfly-friendly outdoor paradise filled with native plants and wildflowers. I hope my garden will have as many butterflies flitting through it as are depicted in the 32nd-note passages in this piece!

Published by Des Press (A0.977359). Abba released Take a Chance on Me - from ABBA: The Album - in January 1978 and it became one of their biggest hits. Influences from this track can be heard in the charts through the following decade and beyond. Needless to say, it remains popular today.  As usual with ABBA tracks, the sound production is a work of art in itself: Myriad small details are woven into the tapestry of this high-energy song, such as an audacious one-note string arrangement, a baritone saxophone, state-of-the-art (at the time) synthesized effects and sophisticated multi-voice overdubbing which includes a less-than-perfect layer that may not be obvious but adds to the character and makes listeners more comfortable singing along, The guitar has awesome sustain, sounding almost Hawaiian, with some very slick licks in-between. This arrangement for string quartet cannot boast such complexity in four parts but tips its hat at what details can be squeezed into an idiomatic transcription. As usual in this series from Des Press, the all-important bass-line is used, giving the cellist a chance to shine as a throbbing groove-machine. This arrangement is in the same tonality as the original recording, so you could even play along for fun. The level is on the easier side of advanced; quickly rehearsed by professional quartets and an accessible challenge for experienced students. Enjoy!

In 2005 I was asked to play in a chamber music performance, with a flautist and violinist, and was surprised to see how little published music there was for this combination....lots for flute , viola, and guitar, but not much with a violin in the mix. The few works I did find were written when composers felt that the guitar should sit in the background and play endless arpeggios, completely devoid of any melodic interest. This Serenade of mine aims to correct that problem. Timing: movement I ~ 3:30, II ~ 5:15, III ~ 3:15 This works very well as part of a classical guitar recital, when it's desirable to add a chamber work.
