I was living in Green Bay following my graduate studies and I was teaching private voice lessons at Appleton West High School with my brother and his wife at the request of the choral director, Kevin Meidl. Kevin was also the director of the Appleton Boychoir and one year he asked me to sing the solo part of this carol for a recording they were making. My arrangement of this carol is rather straightforward with very little altering of the basic rhythms found in the original tune. However, the melody in the first verse is found among triplet figures and therefore one must be sure to bring out the important notes. There is a dance-like quality to the music, reminiscent of a gigue from the Baroque period. Following a brief reprise of the opening material the melody shifts to the left hand, starting out as a single note and soon joined in harmony. To me, it represents the page and the king from the story as they walk through the cold, winter night to bring food and fuel to the peasant living near the mountain. The melody then moves back to the right hand, but is now played in half notes indicating the difficult terrain and the snow they must traverse causing them to move more slowly. The left hand rumbles below as a reminder of the wind blowing and the snow swirling about them. The page, fears he cannot go on, but the king tells him to walk in his footsteps and all will be well. Soon, monarch and servant are moving swiftly to their destination. The music slowly fades as they pass into the mountain’s shadow only to grow once again as they arrive at the poor man’s home. The final chords ring out as the door is thrown open and they step inside to share what they have brought.

Cécile Louise Stéphanie Chaminade (8 August 1857 – 13 April 1944) was a French composer and pianist. Born in Paris, she studied at first with her mother, then with Félix Le Couppey on piano, Marie Gabrie Augustin Savard, Martin Pierre Marsick on violin, and Benjamin Godard in music composition, but not officially, since her father disapproved of her musical education. Her teacher, Benjamin Goddard gave her an assignment to complete, a ballet symphonique, Callirhoë, Op. 37 (1888) that enjoyed many performances which added to its success. Movements from this work were extracted and fashioned for solo piano, namely Pas des écharpes, (Scarf Dance) and Pas des amphores, (Amphora Dance), both of which became popular staples of the piano repertory. This arrangement written in 2014 is playable by either SATB or AATB saxophone quartet. The original key has been changed to a more saxophone-friendly key. The arrangement sets three verses of the melody 'bookended' by a mirrored introduction and coda. It was originally written for trumpet sextet and performed by the cornet section of the Band of the Welsh Guards, before being expanded to military (wind) and brass band formats.In the hymn, one sings of a hopeful final journey to a place without worry or sorrow. The arrangement reflects the mood of these three verses, with increaing tension and movement through ascending lines as the journey progresses towards a final resting place. The hymn is regularly used at funerals and memorial services. The text was originally old German and translated to Norwegian by Bernt Støyland in 1905. Translated to English, the text reads as:I know a castle in heaven above,shining as bright as the sun;you'll find no sin nor sorrow there,and never a tear is shed. I am a weary traveller;may my path lead mefrom here to my Father's land;God, bless me on my way. We thank you for eternityGod the Father, one in three.For you are gentle and mild to us in Jesus Christ! Amen. Note to conductors:The opening and closing sections require precision in the start and release of notes for the chord progression to function. Attention to detail should be paid to each individual crescendi, diminuendi and articulation. This is excellent training for even the best of bands!An optional vocal part is provided in both Norwegian and English, but the arrangement functions with or without it. Cues are written for important lines should players be missing, otherwise many of the parts are doubled across the band. Therefore this arrangement should be playable by bands from approximately 2nd/3rd division upwards even if some players are missing.

It reminds me of the difficulty of Fernando Sor or Matteo Carcassi etudes, so it's great to use this to fine tune technical aspects of your playing. 1. Arranged for guitar. 2. Guitar tablature added. 3. Slurs/slides/stacatto added. 4. Fingerings added. 5. Chord nomenclature added. (classical music doesn't normal have these. They tend to never summarize the notes perfectly, but it's clear to me that they aid in playing the music better in many aspects.)6. Position markers added7. Letter names on white note heads addedTips:1. I imagine E would be played louder.2. Generally, minor chords are played quieter.3. The form is ABA.4. The key change is to the parallel major, A Major. This is a romantic key change (basically Beethoven and after).  5. This piece is beautiful and easy to engrave since it symmetrical.  4 measure phrases. 32 measures fits perfectly on two pages. I say this somewhat jokingly, but the time signature is 32/16/8/4/2 (look into hypermeter).  I enjoy when pieces of music are 4 measure phrases, because then the staff lines themselves actually represent true musical phrases. The opposite of this is called upbeat phrasing, which is when a phrase starts in the middle of a measure.

Brass Ensemble: 3 Trumpets and 2 Trombones - Grade 2.This is also a transcription and a small adaptation of the original score.I chose “La Bourrée” by Michael Praetorius mainly for educational purposes thanks to the not excessive difficulty, but perfect for students with an intermediate level of preparation. Furthermore, the skillful writing of Praetorius and the beauty of this short composition of his, make the piece absolutely suitable to be included in any concert program.Starting from the 4 canonical parts, I focused above all on the redistribution of the voices bringing them to 5 and intervening on the reorganization of the refrains. Always with the utmost respect for the original score, I simply imagined two opposing choirs that alternate, responding to each other and becoming protagonists from time to time, thus replacing the mere repetition of the refrains.The themes, in turn and to the extent possible, were distributed across all the voices using, in some cases, even simple doubling.As in the adaptation of Contrapunctus I by J. S. Bach, ( https://www.sheetmusicplus.com/en/product/contrapunctus-i-from-the-art-of-the-fugue-bwv-1080-22828292.html ) the choice to use 3 trumpets and 2 trombones, and not the more typical brass quintet (2 trumpets, horn, trombone and tuba), was dictated by the formation for which I made the transcription.Finally, on a didactic level, this piece was fundamental to consolidate a formation at the first experiences and allowed me to deepen the salient aspects of ensemble music such as listening, musical breathing and interplay in its broadest sense.To the individual parts, as usual, I also added that of the horn in F, replacing the 3rd trumpet. At your discretion, of course, to decide whether to replace it or double it directly.The total duration is about 2 minutes and 20 seconds and the midi audio should be useful to get an idea of ??the arrangement and to be able to study the individual parts.Good Music!am.
