It is in fact December 18th, 2020 as I write this. The instability and desire for certainty in the piece are very much intended. It is an emotional and searching work that hopefully captures what I, at least, have been feeling for much of the year of loss and reinvention. That my mother commissioned this piece is a tribute to her belief in me, her desire to support me as an artist, her need for something to work on as a pianist and her curiosity. The subtitle, Mom's notes is a shared secret between us.

This is the second album that I have released and it is another soft piano album. Ever since I published my first album ‘Sunday’ I have been wanting to write another one because I enjoyed writing the first one so much. I wanted to write even better pieces than the first one as well as a couple more pieces too. When thinking about a theme for this album, I decided to go for the season of summer and write music that reminds me of summer such as the warm breeze, the fragrance of the trees and flowers, and the sparkle of the sun on the water.In a lot of the pieces in this album, I explored the line between the ambient and melodic world with some pieces featuring a strong melody while others cycle through a chord progression in a certain pattern. This is something that I like to explore in a lot of my music as I think a melody is a great way to make a piece of music memorable but I also find that less melodically driven pieces still have their place in telling a story or setting a mood.So, if you are listening to this album or learning it, I hope that you find each piece enjoyable and that there is one that sticks out to you as your favourite. My intention is for you to listen to them while you drive, study, work, or have a rest or do anything else to make those moments a little more enjoyable and special. It is sung by Calaf, il principe ignoto (the unknown prince), who falls in love at first sight with the beautiful but cold Princess Turandot. However, any man who wishes to wed Turandot must first answer her three riddles; if he fails, he will be beheaded. This arrangement for saxophones can be played by either SATB or AATB quartet, with an optional Bass saxophone part which doubles the Baritone part. I would like to believe that Puccini would have approved of this adaptation of what is perhaps his most recognizable aria since the original orchestration for Turandot calls for a very large orchestra that includes two on-stage Alto Saxophones. I was chatting to my mom in South Africa yesterday, and she requested some new music for her upcoming birthday(preferably me singing another aria), but I woke up with this in my head early this morning and so I got to work. It reminded me a little of all the Chopin waltzes I played many moons ago, and it made me sad that he died at the young age of 39, so I decided to call it The Birthday Waltz. Chopin's music really shaped the way I hear melody, and I love his body of work. And my mom has always been my biggest fan, coach and champion, so I hope she likes this piece, and I guess Ill go and record an aria for her now!!! ps I think this piece will be a great preparation for students who are eager to learn some Chopin Waltzes. It sounds harder than it is and I think it's fun to play (and even my husband loved hearing it all day). I hope you enjoy it too.

Many thanks to Vilson and Kandelab for introducing me to these wonderful melodies and rich cultural heritage. Minis Azaka is known as the great Minister of Agriculture in Haitian Vodou. Iwa peasants bring grievances to him and also reach out to him for prosperity.An invitation is made to a gathering along the countryside and this piece introduces a dignified Minis Azaka entering a hall adorned for his arrival. His followers trail behind him. He sits to listen to their gripes, but also joins them in dance as he isalso a well known dancer. He exits with the same reverence he entered, then disappears into the fields with his entourage. This piece expresses a veil of mystery and darkness setting the tone of great honor and respect. The Nago drum reference is included with the parts. The pattern should be played in reference to the slash marking in the score. The reference is meant as a guide and liberty may be taken with the pattern.
