The composer writes: 'On That Cross' is a powerful reflection on the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. I came up with the lyrics at around 3am in the morning of 3rd December 2014 sitting at a desk in room 703 of the De Syloia Hotel in Hanoi, Vietnam. Often I find that my periods of working abroad give me the space to think of things in new ways. This song is a good example of that.One look at the first page of the score of 'On That Cross' is all you need to realize that this is not a case of a choir singing with a piano accompaniment. I put the piano part above the choir in order to dispel that misconception. So if it's not that, what is it? I wanted to demonstrate that it is possible to approach a subject from two completely different points of view, without either point of view being compromised by the other, and yet the result can nevertheless be a beautiful synergy. That is what the pianist and the choir are doing here. Each is meditating upon the cross of Christ, but from two totally unrelated points of view and yet somehow combining in a way that is almost hypnotically beautifully. There is little obvious relationship between the choir's and the piano's music; and yet each is reconciled to the other ... and there's a very good reason why I wanted the music to speak of such reconciliation.In late 2014 people in Iraq were being beheaded, crucified and generally killed in the most brutal and sadistic manner possible. Their only ‘crime’ was to dare to call themselves Christians. You can say what you like but in my book nobody has the right to tell anybody else what they should believe, much less murder them on religious grounds. The thing that incensed me almost to the point of incandescence was that the perpetrators of this unspeakable evil dared to justify their actions by claiming that they were acting on behalf of their god. So in such frame of mind I started to write the lyrics to 'On That Cross'.The first words that came into my mind were “Oh men who dare to call on gods to justify your hatred – of this be sure …� and I wanted to follow that with threats of eternal damnation, torture in hellfire and so on. Except that the words that flowed out of my fingers onto my computer screen were not like that at all. “Of this be sure – I love you still, my cross your salvation from all the sin of man.�It doesn’t get much more powerful than that. I may be incapable of loving the people of ISIS, ISIL, DAESH or whatever one calls them, but my God isn’t. He created them, he sent his Son to die for them … and he is even now ready to save them, as he is you and me. That’s grace.A small group of us sang this at a Good Friday united service in 2016. We sang it unannounced, at the end of the service, when one would have expected people to start getting up from their seats and leaving the church. Nobody did. In addition to piano concertos, he unfortunately did not write a single work for a symphony orchestra. This can only be understood considering that he himself was a brilliant pianist and has been focused on this instrument throughout his creative life. Meanwhile, analyzing his piano compositions reveals not only mastery, a variety of development techniques, polyphony and multi-layered presentation, but also a symphonic scope and an assumed variety of timbres. In particular, his opus 58 Two Pisces for 2 pianos fully corresponds to what is written above. These circumstances prompted me to orchestrate this work for a large symphony orchestra and thereby try to expand its creativity and popularity.

This album follows the simple story of A Squirrel Named Whiskers. Whiskers is a curious but cautious little squirrel that lives in the woods and enjoys exploring new areas of the woods from time to time when he finishes collecting food for the day. This story follows Whiskers as he ventures out into an unknown part of the woods and happens to stumble across an old abandoned house which is surrounded by trees and bushes. There is no one to be seen or heard here and Whiskers can’t help but explore inside.I began writing this album with the track “And Carefully Crept Inside.” but I actually wasn’t planning on writing a full album at that point. I go into more detail in the individual track’s program note about it but it was the spark that led me to commit to writing a full album. I began composing other tracks for the music box to be part of the album and then I had an idea to make the titles into a story, but what would they be about? The music box is an enchanting and mysterious little instrument and is often associated with magic, fairies, and the forest which is what led me to decide to write the story about a Squirrel.I took some time to write out a short story and then created 10 titles that would fit the story. I continued to write the remaining tracks of the album now using the titles as inspiration to write the music which made it easy to create a certain mood and style. Writing this album was a great exercise in writing music that has a story behind it which something I always try to do when composing. I believe that every piece of music has a story behind it intentionally or unintentionally. I plan to continue to infuse a story in the music I write as it gives it much more meaning than a piece of music being written without a story in mind. I hope you enjoy listening to or practicing these pieces and have fun following along with whiskers on his journey into the unknown.

Published by Thomas Oboe Lee (A0.898494). Full score. I am a frequent visitor to the Protestant Cemetery in Testaccio, Rome. Shelley, Keats and Corso are buried there among other expatriates who adopted the city of Rome as their own. I am a not a huge fan of the music by Ottorino Respighi, whose work, like the Pines of Rome, reminds too much of Hollywood music scores. But I was pleasantly surprised when I discovered on YouTube a chamber work he wrote for mezzo-soprano and string quartet called “Il Tramonto.� The vocal and string writing are exquisite, quite beautiful and heart-felt. When I looked at the source of the text I saw that it was an Italian translation by Roberto Ascoli of a poem by Percy Bysshe Shelley. That immediately inspired me to do my own musical setting of this poem. Two reasons. One, it has a Rome connection. Two, two of my favorite subjects in music are all there in one poem: love and death. Unfortunately I did not find the original English version to be sufficiently “musical.� The archaic language was a bit leaden and convoluted. On the other hand, the Italian translation is so much more lyrical and transcendental. I divided the poem into five parts. At the end I decided to tag on a text I have wanted to set for quite some time: Media Vita. I think the subject of this Latin text fits beautifully as a coda or “apotheosis� to Il Tramonto. I. Moderato … Già v’ebbe un uomo II. Andante … Ora è sommerso il sole III. Adagio … Il given e la dama giacquer tra il sonno IV. Moderato … Neri gli occhi ma non fulgidi più V. Adagio … Ho tal retaggio che la terra non dà VI. Apotheosis: Largo … Media Vita Enjoy!!!

This choral work was originally written by John David for the band Airwaves in 1978. It was later arranged by Peter Knight and recorded by the King's Singers. This transcription for strings follows the very popular King's Singers version. The song is about 2 1/2 minutes long, and easy to read for all string parts. Doublestops could be skipped for beginning players. Bowings are included to facilitate uniform ensemble playing. It is a secular song but is often used by church choirs. It is a lovely ensemble piece when played by string quartet, and can be used for weddings, memorial services, or any occasion requiring hopeful or somber music. According to the composer: The inspiration for New Day was quite simple; I had just had a major blow in my personal life, and was sitting alone late at night on the settee feeling very low, and watching an ominous story on the news about the very real possibility of nuclear war. I started singing to the (hopefully) soon-to arrive New Day like it was an entity, that would rescue me from the depths. If the sun came up and the birds started singing as usual then I could believe that it really was the new day in which life would go on, and in which hope would survive.
