These small doodles, or ‘paper improvisations,’ if you will, began as just that-scribbles that went down in one sitting, without the usual planning devoted to so much of my preceding music for solo piano. As such, they probably sound much different from the Aquarelles or even the more ‘open’ Piano Set, and the player may note some features that are a bit deliberately quirky and experimental-at least for somewhat conservative me. This is not a set, but the pieces may be played together if desired. The otherwise inexplicable title was inspired by an early set of miniatures by Darius Milhaud.

Originally the text for a Gregorian chant, it was later used in polyphonic motets of the 16th century – and many settings have been composed since then. Perhaps the enduring appeal of the poem is based on its simple depiction of Christ’s humanity and humility, together with its expression of devotion to his mother, Mary. In composing my own setting, it pleased me to think of the choir as representing the worldly creatures (people and animals) present at Jesus’s birth; and the saxophone as an otherworldly, mystical presence hovering above. It’s a fanciful notion, but I found it inspiring.

It may take a bit longer to get all of it under the fingers, as anything worth showing off would demand. At first, the intro lick performed by the guitar, and the guitar solo was what inspired me to the arrangement, but I also found the bass line, another attraction to do the job. Thanks, John.  Written in 1931, Leo Robin has related how publisher Con Conrad walked into his hotel room with Russ Columbo and asked him to write words within the hour for a tune he had.  Robin, who was on vacation, at first refused, but Conrad explained that he wanted Columbo to demonstrate it to Flo Ziegfeld who needed a song for Helen Morgan in one of his shows.  Robin then wrote the lyric, which he afterwards said he disliked, and the song was duly performed for Ziegfeld, but he did not accept it.  Russ Columbo, however, sang it on his radio show and recorded it on October 9, 1931, for Victor Records, and it was very popular in 1932.  Columbo also sang it in the 1933 short film That Goes Double.  In 1946, the song became a major hit for Billy Eckstine, Perry Como, and the Ink Spots.
