Published by Anthony Bannach Music (A0.995180). My first string quartet draws a lot of inspiration from early 20th century composers, which perhaps might be my favorite era of classical music. I am oft inspired by the music from Stravinsky, Nielsen, and Debussy, among others. However, the composer to have the most influence on me for the past few years is Bartok, and I believe it is evident in this work as well. I loved Bartok's use of the tritone as a tonal center, the vast and frequent changes of tempo, and the multitude of textural colors and extended techniques in his works. Most of the extended techniques are found in the second movement, an example of which is the Bartok pizzacatto, which today is a commonly found and utilized articulation. But I also have some newer techniques such as aleotoric passages, originally created by composers such as Charles Ives and Henry Crowell and which saw more prominent usage through the likes of John Cage and Witold LutosÅ‚awski, are still quite new and fresh compositional tools. The third movement is much more song-like and tonal in nature than the first two movements, but really adapts Bartok's style of changing the tempo often to bridge different sections. Ultimately, I see the quartet as a microcosm of the music I want to continue writing in the future, not over-indulging in the intellectual exercises of mid-to-late 20th and 21st century classical music, while at the same time not relying on the tonal and emotional tropes of the past. .

The poem mirrors Borges’ own acceptance of his impending blindness. I sought to capture musically the vivid revelations found in each of the stanzas of the poem. The music centers around the note A 440 which tries dramatically to rise to B-flat but is unsuccessful until the very end of the work, underscoring the lines space, time, and Borges now are leaving me. Natalie Merchant's title cut from the 2001 album of the same name, which was dedicated to the victims of the September 11th terrorist attacks. Although the songs were not inspired by the attacks, which occurred shortly after the album's release, there was a prescience in their lyrics, and especially in this song. In Merchant's words, it expresses a craving we all share now for the world we took for granted and lost. The words could now be seen as taking on a new relevance to life during a pandemic, and a plea to keep us safe: Motherland cradle me, close my eyes, lullaby me to sleep, keep me safe, lie with me, stay beside me, don’t go. This arrangement is written as a piano solo for Intermediate to Advanced players, but would also work well as an accompaniment to a vocalist.

The video shows my arrangement of Mercy for String Quartet but without voice, to give you an idea. Many things about it are similar to this version for voice and quartet but the voice carries the tune so it is not so demanding for the first violin. There are some excerpts to listen to in the 30 second sample of the quartet with my daughter singing. This is more difficult to play than some of my other arrangements as it is very syncopated and it is important to feel the stresses on the off beats. As far as possible I have written these as down bows which I hope will help the players to lean into the groove! The pizzicato baseline will need to be prominent, but the inner parts very light, and played near the end of the bow so that the singer can be heard. I have added lyrics to some of the lines to help with the rhythms. I hope you have as much fun playing this one as I did arranging it. David gets to see the major events of his life with the help of his guardian angel, Gabrielle. This manner of storytelling combines elements of It’s a Wonderful Life, A Christmas Carol, and the old TV show This Is Your Life. Each event in David’s life is told through a song. It was originally written as a VBS (Vacation Bible School) musical. Although everyone in Israel is singing his praises, David questions the purpose of his life. Gabrielle shows him that everyone’s life is important, and that the good things that we do are like seeds planted along the way, which may not sprout and grow until much later. After reviewing his past, David is given a glimpse of the future, and realizes that he is one of many who are preparing for the coming of Jesus Christ. The musical is based on the stories from the Bible, mainly from 1 and 2 Samuel, but also including a Psalm and a geneaology listing from Matthew. David throws in a couple of bad puns as he tries to understand what Gabrielle is trying to tell him. The accompaniment is written for piano, but is appropriate for a praise team or a small dance band. The styles are quite varied, including cha-cha, pop, bossa nova, ballad, dirge, blues, jazz, and waltz. The piano accompaniment could be supplemented by percussion instruments (tambourine, maracas, woodblock, cowbell, etc.), as well as guitar, saxophone, and drums. The songs are at an Easy Intermediate level. The only stage requirements are a small balcony or elevated level with a railing or fence, and a floor area for the chorus. The musical consists of 10 scenes, but the two narrator characters remain on the balcony, and the floor area only needs to be changed in case the chorus members use different costumes and/or props for the different scenes.
