When I originally spoke with Sande MacMorran, the tuba player for whom I composed the piece, we discussed the technicalities of the instrument; its optimal range, timbre, and articulation. Sande mentioned, in passing, that the rhythm of swing music is a natural fit for the instrument and even sang a few lines to give examples.In the following days, when I began to plan the new composition, I was surprised that the idea of playing ping-pong unexpectedly took hold of my mind and I couldn’t shake it off. At first, it seemed random and unrelated, but then, as I thought about the rhythmic patterns of the game, it all became clear.In ping-pong, the paddle hits the ball and then the ball hits the table in a pattern reminiscent of the rhythm of swing. While beginners tend to play slower, in triplets, the professionals, much faster, with the table note dotted or even double-dotted. Once I realized what my subconscious was trying to tell me, I listened to (not merely watched) several videos of ping-pong matches and discovered a wealth of entertaining rhythmic patterns. Thus the idea for this miniature tuba piece was born.While the tuba may seem a clumsy and awkward instrument, it is actually quite agile and flexible. It can perform many challenging melodic figures or quick jumps between registers, and it can certainly play ping-pong.Total duration: 1’25, suitable for advanced players.

Published by Gary Ray Adkison (A0.953727). Holy God Medley is a medley of the Christian hymns: He Leadeth Me, O Blessed Thought and Holy, Holy, Holy arranged for 4-5 octave handbell choirs. It starts with a two measure introduction, followed by He Leadeth Me, O Blessed Thought. This is fairly up-tempo, with a surprise modulation going into the chorus. In the chorus, there are bass runs, a brief descant line, and doubling of the melody into the high bells. There are then two verses of Holy, Holy, Holy. The first verse is slow and is in ¾ time, instead of the normal common meter. It is also soft and *very* plain, as a setup for the last verse, which is faster, and grows in volume to the end, with much fuller chords, and uses the normal common meter that the original hymn uses. There is another surprise modulation halfway through this verse. Very full chords are used, with a brief bass clef downward arpeggio in the next to last measure, to emphasize the ending. The first verse of Holy, Holy, Holy can be performed with handchimes, if desired, although the arrangement is not scored as such. The audio demonstration clip provided is in a piano voice (patch) but suffices to demonstrate how this arrangement is generally meant to sound. I believe that this is probably a 2+ (2 plus) arrangement in degree of difficulty.

This is a loop station composition for electric violin that I composed for my live-looping duo, The Khromatiks, in 2013. Doing my part to increase the available repertoire for extended range violins out here on the internet!I originally recorded this tune on a 7-string electric violin with a Boss RC-30 loop station. That being said, there are plenty of other gear configurations that will work. Any phrase looper/sampler that is capable of playing 2 separate tracks or sections with overdubs will be able to handle this structure, such as the Singular Sound Aeros, Boomerang III, Ableton Live with a MIDI controller, etc. If you don't play 7-string, a 5-string can also play this chart as written if you use an octave pedal to record the low bass lines. A standard 4-string can also work, although some phrases will have to be transposed 8va.A little about this tune: the head melody is a basic lydian dominant motif that gets displaced forwards or backwards by a sixteenth note on each iteration. In Nashville Number System, we call this sort of syncopation a push, which inspired the title. This idea transitions into a B solo section with a latin songo groove. This is a great tune for practicing tight rhythmic syncopation, or for developing solo ideas on modal scales!With The Khromatiks this piece was performed as a duo with violin & drums/percussion, but also works as a violin solo. If you have a looper capable of syncing to a click track, you could also try adding bass (plays the bottom line of loop 2 only) or guitar/keyboards (read the chord symbols as a lead-sheet). This arrangement will require students to switch back and forth between a straight eight-note Latin feel and the traditional jazz swing feel .
