This is an arrangement for solo instrument and piano pitched at around the level of ABRSM Grade 4/5 for most instruments. The range of notes is very compact with the difficulty steming from the often complicated rhythms and also the opening statement of the main theme is unaccompanied requiring the soloist to play with confidence and accuracy. The use of syncopated rhythms makes this an excellent repertoire piece.Heaven Is a Place on Earth is a single by American singer Belinda Carlisle from her second studio album, Heaven on Earth (1987). Written by Rick Nowels and Ellen Shipley, the song was released as the lead single from the Heaven on Earth album on September 14, 1987, and it reached number one on the US Billboard Hot 100 on December 5, 1987, becoming Carlisle's only US chart-topper to date. A month later it peaked at number one in the United Kingdom, where it held the top spot of the UK Singles Chart for two weeks. In Australia it peaked at number 2. It is considered to be Carlisle's signature song.The song was nominated for the Grammy Award for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance in 1988, but lost out to Whitney Houston's I Wanna Dance with Somebody (Who Loves Me).

It is an emotional and searching work that hopefully captures what I, at least, have been feeling for much of the year of loss and reinvention. That my mother commissioned this piece is a tribute to her belief in me, her desire to support me as an artist, her need for something to work on as a pianist and her curiosity. The subtitle, Mom's notes is a shared secret between us.

Ever since I published my first album ‘Sunday’ I have been wanting to write another one because I enjoyed writing the first one so much. I wanted to write even better pieces than the first one as well as a couple more pieces too. When thinking about a theme for this album, I decided to go for the season of summer and write music that reminds me of summer such as the warm breeze, the fragrance of the trees and flowers, and the sparkle of the sun on the water.In a lot of the pieces in this album, I explored the line between the ambient and melodic world with some pieces featuring a strong melody while others cycle through a chord progression in a certain pattern. This is something that I like to explore in a lot of my music as I think a melody is a great way to make a piece of music memorable but I also find that less melodically driven pieces still have their place in telling a story or setting a mood.So, if you are listening to this album or learning it, I hope that you find each piece enjoyable and that there is one that sticks out to you as your favourite. My intention is for you to listen to them while you drive, study, work, or have a rest or do anything else to make those moments a little more enjoyable and special. Nessun dorma (English: None shall sleep) is an aria from act three of Turandot, and is one of the best-known tenor arias in all opera. Luciano Pavarotti made it one of his signature arias. It is sung by Calaf, il principe ignoto (the unknown prince), who falls in love at first sight with the beautiful but cold Princess Turandot. However, any man who wishes to wed Turandot must first answer her three riddles; if he fails, he will be beheaded. This arrangement for saxophones can be played by either SATB or AATB quartet, with an optional Bass saxophone part which doubles the Baritone part. I would like to believe that Puccini would have approved of this adaptation of what is perhaps his most recognizable aria since the original orchestration for Turandot calls for a very large orchestra that includes two on-stage Alto Saxophones. This work consists of three short movements in irregular meters.  The contrabass part is not optional but may be played on a regular bass flute if no contra is available.  The first movement, Stomp is in 9/8, conducted in 4: (initially 3 + 2 + 2 + 2 changing to 2 + 2 + 2 + 3 halfway through) with a heavy pulse and a bluesy chord progression in E minor. The second movement, Waltz is in 3 (3 + 3 + 2) with a momentary straight 3 in the middle section. This sweet little melody in G major is a bright contrast to the aggressive first movement. The final movement, Reeling is in 5/8 (2 + 3) with a brief detour to 2/4 near the end, in E major. It is a joyous dizzy layering of twirling notes in the upper voices against a rising grounded melody in the lower voices.  Each movement is 2 ½ to 3 minutes in length. Although it did not win a prize, having entered the competition left me with a neat little piano piece to show for it, as well as the present transcription which I created for flutist Peter Sheridan in 2015. The set of variations opens with the traditional Korean theme accompanied by arpeggios. This is followed by Variation 1, a sad waltz in the style of a Chopin waltz. Next comes Variation 2, a funeral march in the manner of Chopin’s Funeral March from the Piano Sonata in B-flat Minor, Op. 35. Variation 3 is a Tango written in tribute to one of my favorite composers, Astor Piazzolla. Variation 4 combined the Korean tune with motifs from the slow movement of Beethoven’s Symphony No. 6, The Pastoral. The set of variations closes with a repeat of the opening passage. -Stanley M. I was chatting to my mom in South Africa yesterday, and she requested some new music for her upcoming birthday(preferably me singing another aria), but I woke up with this in my head early this morning and so I got to work. It reminded me a little of all the Chopin waltzes I played many moons ago, and it made me sad that he died at the young age of 39, so I decided to call it The Birthday Waltz. Chopin's music really shaped the way I hear melody, and I love his body of work. And my mom has always been my biggest fan, coach and champion, so I hope she likes this piece, and I guess Ill go and record an aria for her now!!! ps I think this piece will be a great preparation for students who are eager to learn some Chopin Waltzes. It sounds harder than it is and I think it's fun to play (and even my husband loved hearing it all day). I hope you enjoy it too.

I made these options available for any bassist with different preferences. I know we are unique, as I am a bassist as well. James Brown wrote this song based on a 12-bar blues (A section) with an additional 4-bar sax interlude and an 8-bar B section. The key is in D Major, and the tempo is at 144 bpm.
