This famous song is from the cycle Weihnachtslieder (“Christmas Songs�) by the deeply spiritual German composer Peter Cornelius. Composed in 1856 and revised in 1859 and 1870, the cycle is one of the composer’s most popular works. He was an amateur composer and according to the 1911 census, worked as a glass bottle neck maker at a mineral water works. His traditional carol “Christmas Eve� was published in the Barnsley Chronicle on 23 December 1933. In 2023 the carol was rediscovered in the Barnsley Chronicle Archives and shared with the public to coincide with the 90th anniversary of Barnsley Town Hall. Performers should feel free to omit verses and or alter the text as required. A keyboard part is provided for rehearsals.
