JS Bach's Jesu Joy has been slightly adapted to accommodate the solo trumpet playing Blessed Assurance. The key of G major (written A major) is a fine key for the solo trumpet to play and the counterpoint provided by these iconic tunes, one European, the other uniquely American, is compelling! This arrangement would be ideal across the denominations at any time during the year and especially Christmas and Easter. For added convenience the full score has an individual trumpet part as well as a two-page choral score attached. There is also a separate four page organ score attached.

A gentle mountain snowfall…an icy midnight sojourn…the simple, quiet joy of first snow…

I found the perfect voice for the feelings and scenes of winter I wanted to convey in the tiny verses known as haiku.  I’ve always loved haiku. I admire the expressive power that the skilled poet can wring out of such bare economic means.  A scene, painted so poignantly, so vividly—an essence, a sigh, a quick, visceral sketch to capture the deceptively-simple drama of nature revealing itself.  They are epigrams of life. I hope these little morsels of music and words fill you with the essence of the winter season and that I’ve been able to impart some of the enthusiasm and admiration I feel for this wonderful aspect of Japanese culture.

The First Christmas is an 84 measure, 4-5 octave, handbell choir medley of the Christmas carols: The First Nowell, O Come, O Come Emmanuel, Lo, How a Rose E’er Blooming, and Angels from the Realms of Glory Parts of O Come, O Come Emmanuel, and Lo, How a Rose E’er Blooming are scored for OPTIONAL 3 octaves of handchimes, but handbells can be substituted, if desired. Those two carol selections are reserved, reverent, soft and slow, in contrast to the first and last selections, which are much more exuberant in nature. This medley varies in tempo, volume levels, and style, throughout. Towards the end, there are tolls (swings) and a shake. It includes a brief introduction and an extended half-timed ending. Occasionally, there are descant lines and bass runs. I believe that this would be a level 2+ (2 plus) arrangement. The MP3 audio file provided is in a piano voice (patch) but suffices to demonstrate how this arrangement is generally meant to sound.

Panis angelicus (Latin for Bread of Angels or Angelic Bread) is the penultimate strophe of the hymn Sacris solemniis written by Saint Thomas Aquinas for the feast of Corpus Christi as part of a complete liturgy of the feast.

The strophe of Sacris solemniis that begins with the words Panis angelicus (bread of angels) has often been set to music separately from the rest of the hymn. Most famously, in 1872 César Franck set this strophe for tenor voice, harp, cello, and organ.

This arrangement is very ideal for Easter concerts. The level is Intermediate and the duration is 3.50 minutes.
