The Polish virtuoso pianist and composer Frédéric Chopin (1810 – 1849) wrote almost exclusively for piano.  His works exploit the full range of the instrument, combining extreme technical challenges with opportunities for subtle nuance and sensitivity – features which characterised his own performances. This hymn-like chorale melody comes from the central section of Chopin’s Nocturne Op. 37, No. 1.  Some of the composer’s biographers have suggested that this element of the work reflects Chopin’s belief in the strength and consolation provided by religion.The piece is fairly straightforward in terms of notes and rhythms, but requires sensitivity to dynamics, intonation and ensemble to perform effectively.  An excellent training item to have in your repertoire!
