In the early 1940s, The Van Wert (north-western Ohio) Woman’s Club would invite “famous†people to speak to the assembly. It is believed that after learning that Van Wert had a huge peony cultivation festival running since the early 1900s, Meredith wrote this song. One of the first recordings was in 1949 by Danny Kaye; the orchestration was for winds, brass, percussion, and piano.
