A brand new piece, jolly and lively all the way through. Composed in 7/8 time most of the way though, giving the playerssomething to think about, and the audience something to enjoy. There is chance for the players to re-gain their composure during a lovely little flugel solo (thankfully, in the more common 3/4 time!). The band then join in and the fun returns, getting faster and faster before another break into the Lento, where the trombones and solo horn feature. However, a rousing ending isn’t far away!!! A stunning work, good fun, and enjoyable by all.

In the late 1990s, a score was found in Germaine Tailleferre’s papers with the title page “Choral et Fugue pour orchestre d’harmonie� and a dedication “à L'Harmonie Municipale de Lyon�. The pages which followed contained the score of “Choral� for organ with optional brass and “Fugue� for orchestra. When the late composer Desiré Dondeyne was consulted concerning this score, he confirmed that this work had been projected, but refused to say anything further on the subject. Research was undertaken to try to locate a scale in the municipal archives of the City of Lyons (as the Municipal Band no longer exists) but proved to be unsucessful. It is unclear whether or not Tailleferre intended to undertake this work herself or if she intended to entrust it (as she often did) to Dondeyne. In any case, it would appear that the concert band version for this work was probably never completed. Paul Wehage, a longtime scholar of the works of Tailleferre, has undertaken the orchestration of this work The Fugue movement remains close to Tailleferre’s original version for orchestra. The choral section is entirely rescored. From there, the music is full of passionate melodic lines, and fanfare statements. The music is dominated by the colour of the tenor horn section, which has the ability to create wonderful soft sounds, as well as providing the substance to the fortissimo fanfares. Set in the 16th century, it is based on the life of John of Leiden, Anabaptist leader and King of Münster, with the libretto influenced by the works of Voltaire. The 5-act opera deals with love, revenge and tragedy. It was premiered by the Paris Opera at the Salle Le Peletier on 16 April 1849, with audience members including Chopin, Verdi, Delacroix, Charles Dickens and Berlioz.During his life, Meyerbeer was a dominant figure in the world of opera, with Hector Berlioz saying of him 'he has not only the luck to be talented, but the talent to be lucky.'This arrangement is for the UK-style brass band, with alternative parts for horns in F and bass-clef lower brass. Foster was likely inspired by Harriet Beecher Stowe's anti-slavery novel Uncle Tom's Cabin, as evidenced by the title of a sketch in Foster's sketchbook, Poor Uncle Tom, Good-Night! This arrangement has been given a fresh upgrade and re-cooked into an upbeat Bluegrass style which appears from the oven as My Old Kentucky Fried Chicken !.  Everyone gets to have their solo spot.

Overture Brilliante is a 5:30 work for concert band.  It is intended for high school, college and community bands. The dissonant introduction leads to a bright and rhythmic allegro section that utilizes the full coiler of the modern concert band. The contrasting middle section features solo lines for euphonium and cornet before returning to a restatement of the opening allegro.  The percussion parts beyond the standard timpani and battery are optional but add work for the larger percussion sections found in many ensembles while not limiting performance to smaller sections.

The final section modulates between both major and minor as though both sections have collided and converged.Original piece of music composed for a small four-part brass ensemble of Intermediate to Advanced players, ideal for secondary school students or small brass bands.
