The saxophone hadn't even been invented back then, but I like to think he'd have enjoyed 'Una of Ulva' in a waltz setting for soprano, alto, tenor and baritone sax.

Song collector Alexander Campbell wrote a setting of this comical poem about a piper and a triyodyan - which I think was what they would have called a village simpleton.  An ungainly lout, at any rate!  The tune is awkward and lumbering, but I have a certain affection for it - it's quite comical!  The last movement of my saxophone quartet, and a fitting ending.

Campbell's Farewell to Red Gap is a folk tune probably originating in the British Isles that is often played by old-time and Irish fiddlers in the U.S. This arrangement is for an Intermediate String Trio (two violins and a cello.) It starts with an imitation of bagpipes, then the melody is taken up by the violins. The players have fun as they pass the melodies among themselves.  Separate sheets are provided for each instrument in addition to the score. Campbell's Farewell to Red Gap is a fiddle tune originating in the British Isles that is often played by old-time fiddlers in the U.S. This arrangement is the first in McIntire's series, Introduction to Fiddling. The tune is arranged at the Easy Intermediate level in A Mixolydian (two sharps), and it is accompanied by information about key signatures, modes, and tips on fiddling for those new to this style of playing. The tune starts with an imitation of a bagpipe's drone and it includes the chords for other instruments to play along.

Over 200 years ago, Scottish musician Joshua Campbell wrote a fiddle tune called The Beautifull Town of Glasgow (yes, he meant beautiful, but that's how he spelled it!) in the Georgian era.  I have arranged it here for two flutes, violin, viola and cello.  It goes at quite a lick - after all, it's a dance - and the strings can go wild with their pizzicato!  A few zany trills for the flutes, which they share with the violin at one point, and some off-beat work for everyone.
