Bassoon Solo - Level 5 - Digital Download SKU: A0.918680 Composed by Jenni Brandon. Contemporary. Individual part. 13 pages. Jenni Brandon Music #5709157. Published by Jenni Brandon Music (A0.918680). Compostela (JB 147) by Jenni Brandon. This work tells the story of the pilgrimage along The Camino Francés, the most popular of the pilgrimage routes through Spain that lead to Santiago de Compostela, or the church where the bones of St. James the Apostle are said to be buried. The title of this work, Compostela is translated by some to mean field of a star. This comes from the legend of the discovery of St. James the apostle – his body was said to be revealed by a star. The bassoon narrates what we may see and hear along this path, how we may feel, and what we discover about ourselves as we take this personal journey. In one movement, this work has several sections that highlight locations and important items along the way. Commissioned and recorded by Eric Van der Veer Varner. In one movement with sections:I. Summer:  Two people who found love find themselves unable to escape from it, as a fiery passion that came without any warning. Then they remember every beautiful moment they had been through together. They know the reality would be cruel, but it did not impede their passion. blood flows in their bodies. It shouted loudly from deep in their hearts. Autumn: When the leaves started to fall, they could only share the same sky and a reversal of night and day. However, romance was always there and the long distance they experienced before the passion, they cherished more. Furthermore, as they recalled their love, it was like a thunderstorm but gradually became peaceful.

Bass Flute,Instrumental Solo,Piano - Level 2 - Digital Download SKU: A0.549846 Composed by Johann Sebastian Bach. Arranged by James M. Guthrie, ASCAP. Baroque,Concert,Easter,Sacred,Standards. Score and individual part. 12 pages. Jmsgu3 #3554877. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.549846). Wachet auf, ruft uns die Stimme (Awake, the voice is calling us) from Cantata BWV 140. Duration: ca. 4:00, Score: 6 pages, solo part 1 page, piano part: 4 pages. Program this for church services during the Easter season, weddings, or as a recital encore.Wachet auf, ruft uns die Stimme (Awake, the Voice is calling us) also known as: Sleepers Awake Bach composed his church cantata Wachet auf (BWV 140) as part of his second annual cantata cycle covering the entire annual church calendar. It is based on the hymn of the same name by Philipp Nicolai (1599). The hymn text covers the readings for the 27th Sunday after Trinity. Bach designed the cantata in seven movements, setting the stanzas in various forms. Among these forms are the chorale fantasia, the chorale prelude, and a four-part chorale. He casts the new lyrics as recitatives – in a manner similar to the opera. Fourth Movement Bach writes the fourth movement, Zion hört die Wächter singen (Zion hears the watchmen singing), in the style of a chorale prelude with the chorale phrases performed as a strict cantus firmus. The phrases seem to enter at times erratically against the famous lyrical melody. The violins play this melody in unison as a foil against the cantus phrases. The violin melody is so independent and complete that when the cantus melody appears it catches the listener at times totally off-guard. Bach later transcribed this movement for organ (BWV 645). This transcription became No. 1 of the Six Schübler Chorales. Bach Overview First of all, Johann Sebastian Bach is maybe the greatest composer in music history. Certainly, he was prolific. As a result, everyone has heard of his works. Furthermore, these works number well over a thousand. It seems like people are probably most familiar with the instrumental works such as the Brandenburg Concertos, and the Goldberg Variations. But, similarly famous are such noteworthy works as the Well-Tempered Clavier, the Musical Offering, and certainly the Art of Fugue. Seems like his most famous vocal works include the most noteworthy Mass in B Minor. Also, most noteworthy, though, are the St. John Passion, and certainly the Christmas Oratorio.  History Bach came from a long line of musicians and above all, composers. Consequently, he, first of all, pursued a career as a church organist. So as a result, he gained employment in various Protestant churches in Germany. For a while, he worked as a court musician in Weimar and Köthen. Here he probably developed his organ style and likewise his chamber music style. Eventually, he, therefore, gained an appointment as Cantor of St. Thomas in Leipzig. Here he worked until difficulties with his employer ultimately drove him away. The King of Poland finally appointed him as court composer.  Style It seems like Bach created a fascinating new international style. He synthesized elements of the most noteworthy European music ideas into his new style. Even more, this new style was probably his synthesis of European musical rhythm and form. Furthermore, he demonstrated a complete mastery of counterpoint and motivic development. His sense of harmonic organization probably propelled him to the top. Revival               Mendelssohn conducted a Bach revival in the nineteenth century. His effort probably helped to re-familiarize the public with the magnitude of Bach’s works. During this period, scholars published many noteworthy Bach biographies. Moreover, Wolfgang Schmieder published the BWV (Bach Werke Verzeichnis). As a result, this is now the official catalog of his entire artistic output. The BWV number allows us to locate a work in the catalog. Sometimes scholars will simply use an S (Schmieder) as an abbreviation for BWV. &n.

Cello,Piano,Viola,Violin - Level 2 - Digital Download SKU: A0.548706 Composed by Adam. Arranged by James M. Guthrie, ASCAP. Christmas,Standards. 18 pages. Jmsgu3 #3411563. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.548706). Cantique de Noël The French composer Adolphe Adam was already famous as a composer of many successful ballets and operas. Then, in the 1840s, he wrote his most famous work - O Holy Night. The original song title was Minuit Chretiens or Cantique de Noël.  Placide Cappeau provided the original song lyrics. The song was first performed in Roquemaure by the opera singer Emily Laurey at midnight mass in 1847. It became trendy among the French, much like Silent Night was famous elsewhere. In 1850, John S. Dwight, a Unitarian minister and music teacher, translated the song into English.   Adolphe Adam Adam studied organ and composition at the Paris Conservatoire in his younger years. He also played the timpani in the Conservatoire orchestra. Adam used his savings and borrowed money to open a new opera house - the fourth opera house in Paris in 1847. Unfortunately, the Revolution of 1848 forced him to close. He taught composition at the Paris Conservatoire from 1849 until he died in 1856. Placide Cappeau The poet Cappeau was an advocate of the French Enlightenment philosopher Voltaire. Voltaire was renowned for criticizing the Catholic church, religious intolerance, and dogma in general. Consequently, Cappeau made the Redeemer figure in his song a kind of reformer of injustices, particularly the problem of original sin. To begin with, people recognized Cappeau's theology as eccentric, probably even doubtful. Theology In the earlier form of Minuit, the Christ figure descends to intervene with His Father's plan to punish humanity. Traditional doctrine pronounces that Christ came from love, not to intervene. This version also declares that Christ appeared to delete the original sin of Adam. Cappeau removed this part from his poem years later because he didn't believe it. He preferred to portray Christ as the reformer of disparity and unfairness. Before long, the writer/politician Alphonse de Lamartine called the Minuit the Marseillaise of religion. Most French churchmen agreed with this idea but did not consider it a tribute.

Choral Choir,Choral (SSAA) - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.890640 Composed by Stella ter Hart. Concert,Folk,Jewish,Standards. 8 pages. Stella ter Hart #3455425. Published by Stella ter Hart (A0.890640). Inspired by the 1,116 orphaned Polish children who, as Holocaust survivors, were brought to Canada after World War II  and became known as The Redeemed Children. These tunes, and others like them, were the only possessions they had  and their only direct connection to the past.  I received a copy of a book of tunes (unarranged) while speaking at a conference; an elderly gentlemen came up to me, pressed them into my hands and asked me to help keep them alive. The work features two tunes, both on the theme of motherhood.  The first tune describes a young mother shushing everything around her so that her little son can sleep.  The second tune rejoices when the poor are raised up and a barren woman's house is filled with the laughter of children. To honour the integrity of the tunes, this work features idiomatic writing and harmonies and captures not only the rhythm but also the intended mood and sentiment.  Brief solo opportunities feature a soprano and alto in a traditional 'cantor' style section.  Shifting from sweet and gentle to driving and energetic, this is an excellent work to build musical expression, story telling and deep empathy.Suitable for all intermediate level treble choirs for any recital, concert or festival occasion.Duration:  4:05                                                                                                                                                                         Key Structure:  Eflat major and C minor                                                                                                                             Level:  intermediate                                                                                                                                                       Language: Yiddish and Hebrew (translations and pronunciation guide provided)composer contact:  www.stellaterhart.com

In addition to obvious references to the flag, it incorporates snippets of other popular songs, including one of his own. Cohan wrote it in 1906 for his stage musical George Washington, Jr. You're a Grand Old Flag quickly became the first song from a musical to sell over a million copies of sheet music. The original lyric for this perennial George M. Cohan favorite came, as Cohan later explained, from an encounter he had with a Civil War veteran who fought at Gettysburg. The two men found themselves next to each other and Cohan noticed the vet held a carefully folded but ragged old flag. The man reportedly then turned to Cohan and said, She's a grand old rag. Cohan thought it was a great line and originally named his tune You're a Grand Old Rag. So many groups and individuals objected to calling the flag a rag, however, that he gave 'em what they wanted and switched words, renaming the song You're a Grand Old Flag.

MP Sheet Music #814392. Published by MP Sheet Music (A0.1217874). Composition and characteristics  All of Me is a jazz standard whose lyrics and music were written by Gerald Marks and Seymour Simons in 1931. It has an ABAC structure and was originally written in the key of B-flat major. The melody combines the music's contradictory possibilities. The downward thrusts of the opening phrases suggest emotional despair, while the final line, with its repeated high notes, sounds almost jubilant. It usually runs in an average time. All of Me first came to public notice when a performance by Belle Baker was broadcast on the radio in 1931. After that a few others also became successful.Frank Sinatra recorded several versions of All of Me. Its 1948 release peaked at No. 21. He also sang it in the film Meet Danny Wilson, which may have helped Johnnie Ray's performance reach No. 12 in the charts that year. Sinatra's use of All of Me brought a non-jazz audience to the song, as did Willie Nelson, whose version was included on his Stardust album and reached No. 3 on the Hot Country Songs chart in 1978. In 2000, All of Me of Me received the Towering Song Award from the Songwriters Hall of Fame.

Published by Will Corbin (A0.1458413). Basin Street sits on the edge of the French Quarter of New Orleans. A few years before this song was written, it served as the border of a red-light district known as Storyville. A city councilman named Sidney Story came up with the idea of creating a district to which prostitution would be limited, where it could be watched and regulated. So The District was created in 1897; it soon became known as Storyville, much to the chagrin of Councilman Story. During its 20-year official life, a visitor could buy a blue book for two bits that listed prostitutes alphabetically and by race and address. It was abolished in 1917 during World War I because it violated a rule that no house of prostitution could be within 5 miles of a military base. The Navy wanted its sailors pure of heart. It's also a place where jazz grew up. The bordellos hired musicians to entertain customers, who weren't particularly interested in the music. So the mostly black performers were free to experiment, to try new syncopated rhythms, to blend the sounds of African drums and plantation gospel to come up with what would become known as Dixieland music. Storyville (it would later mostly be razed for public housing, and still later begin to gentrify as property values rose) was where Spencer Williams wrote the song in 1928; Louis Armstrong, who spent some of his childhood nearby, first recorded it in 1928. It has since been recorded by dozens of other artists. If you need alternative instrumentation, I'm happy to accommodate. Contact me at wilcor@aol.com.

It is a little surprising that tangos were popular in the European Jewish community around 1920. There had been a large group of Jewish immigrants going to Argentina in the late 1800's, and they in turn brought the Argentine tango back to Europe where it became very popular, especially in Poland. Those musicians made the tango format their own, adding the sound of popular Jewish cabarets and theaters along with Yiddish lyrics. The music came from a book of Yiddish songs, Yiddish Songs from Warsaw compiled by Jane Peppler, who gave permission to use her melodies and harmonies for this setting for flute and clarinet duet.

Published by Elena Fortin (A0.744622). Winter StormYears ago, I played the Bach Prelude in C Minor (BMV 999) in the RCM books. It can now be found in the Level 6 Repertoire Book of the Celebration Series by the Royal Conservatory of Music. As a creative challenge, I thought to myself: What would happen if I took the Prelude, and put it ALL in the left hand. And what would happen if some furious diva decided to play a melody over the top of this prelude? This piece is the result: a fantastic, Chopinesque remix of JS Bach. I stayed true to the Prelude wherever possible, sticking to the glorious harmonies that were explored by his genius. The melody came out stormy–and since I live in Canada, it became the perfect title. Winter Storm. The piece is challenging as a solo recital piece, but well-worth learning if you are a fan of Bach and Chopin. The left hand never stops–and has some challenging leaps and booming bass notes. The right hand is challenged with odd rhythmic subdivisions, 3’s against 2’s being one of my favourites, as well as a challenging 11 against 4 flurry of notes. Further challenges include a RH double note pattern at the end, trills, and ornaments. If you want an extra challenge, you could always play it faster–my speed in the video is conservative, only because I was trying to make sure I got the correct notes!  Please visit my website: www.the-piano-studio.com to check out what I'm up to.
