The Ballad of William Taylor (or Willy Taylor), Bold William Taylor or The Female Lieutenant (as it is sometimes called) tells the story of a woman who is deserted on her wedding day by William Taylor because he has been pressed ganged and sent away to sea. She decides to follow after him and disguises herself as a man in order to sign up. Her identity is discovered when her tunic bursts open during a battle revealing her womanhood! She tells the Captain she is looking for William Taylor and he tells her where to find him. However, William Taylor has found a new lady. Clearly upset that William Taylor has forgotten her so easily our heroine draws a pair of pistols and dispatches both her disloyal lover and his new lady! In some versions the Captain is so impressed with her that he either marries her himself or makes her a ship’s commander or both! In this arrangement for SSA the middle voice is always on the tune in the verses whereas the higher and lower harmony voices either sing the melody or their harmony part. It is important these counter- melodies do not overpower the tune and the words otherwise the story is lost. Try to bring out the melody in the chorus. In fact you might like to try having all the voices on the melody for the first chorus to establish it. Also works with mixed voices by adding men to the alto part for the verses and the melody line for the chorus. Derek Hasted writes This fantastic melody deserves more fame than it gets, though when it first came out it was Captain and Tennille’s second No 1 hit on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.

My arrangement captures the three verses that feature in this piece, and also contains the instrumental break (originally on the lyricon), with most of the ornamentation (except for the big bends that the lyricon can do electronically).

This arrangement is set in the same keys as the original, and modulates from C to G (for the instrumental) and then to D.

The accompaniment fits nicely on guitar, and it’s ideal for an intermediate duo.
With the exception of the instrumental break, which is taken by Guitar 1, neither guitar part comes out of first position all that much, and both parts use familiar chord shapes, whichever key the piece is in at that moment...

The roles of tune and accompaniment change over at each verse, so there’s plenty of variety for the players and audience alike.

This is one of those pieces that a concert audience will be humming all the way home...

For more than a year after abdicating the throne of Russia, Nicholas and his family have been under house arrest. The opera opens with the former Czar lamenting his fall from power and precarious circumstances. His wife, Anexandra, consoles him and they sing of their undying love in the duet, One Love Forever.

One by one, the children awake and join them on stage. Anastasia dramatically portrays a dream she has just had. Then, in an upbrat song of hope she explains her optimistic outlook in My Name Is Anastasia. The ensemble joins her at the end, assuring one another they will all soon be rising up to life again. To while away the time, the family pretends they are at the French Ambassador's New Year's Ball.

At the height of the ensuing waltz, Comrade Sladislav, Captain of the Red Guard, and a band of revolutionary guards burst it. Sladislav harangues Nicholas and the family. Then, in the vindictive Song of the Revolution, he extols the greatness of la Révolution as the family watches in fear. Nicholas and Alexandra remind each other of their one love forever and the children look for dawn in darkest night. The Captain then marches the family down to the cellar (off-stage), ostensibly to await transport. Thus trapped, they are easy prey for the revolvers of Sladislav and his men. The self-satisfies revolutionary reemerges and makes his closing statements before exiting.

The guitar seldom comes out of first position and uses familiar chord shapes.
The flute part has a top G, but it can easily be replaced by another top E if the G is not rock solid. By the same token, some of the repeated notes can be replaced by a sustained note if you feel that makes for a more relaxed articulation.

This is one of those pieces that a concert audience will be humming all the way home...

As I personally originate from Stoke on Trent, England, where the Captain of the Titanic Cruise Ship (1911-1912) was born, I wanted to dedicate this Symphony in memory of the Captain and all the lives that were lost.

This is my revised version of this symphony which I added another movement (Adagio 3rd movement) from my 2018-2019 version on April 8th 2020. 

The Symphony has four movements.

4. In Memoriam
