Composed by Carl Meinecke. Arranged by Marc Oliver. Contemporary. Score and parts. 152 pages. Ayotte Custom Musical Engravings #2002251. Published by Ayotte Custom Musical Engravings (A0.732944).

Amidst the Thunder of Cannons' is 1 of 2 band works written by Carl Meinecke although his focus was mostly on orchestra where he was both violinist and conductor. The music was published first by A.E. Fischer in Germany in 1907 and in 1913 by Carl Fischer in the US. The piece is well crafted in the German march style with skillful melodic and contrapuntal writing. There is a refreshing change of meter from cut time to 6/8 at the Trio. Marc Oliver's brand new edition is crisp and clean and the first new edition in nearly a century. 'Amidst the Thunder of Cannons' is a welcome addition to the band repertoire in the 21st century.

Composed by Ethel Barns. Arranged by Music for a While. 20th Century,Chamber,Classical,Romantic Period. Score. 4 pages. Music for a While #778089. Published by Music for a While (A0.1178126).

Born in 1873, Ethel Barns studied at the Watford School of Music and later at the Royal Academy of Music in London before becoming famous as a violinist-composer. During her career Barns composed over 120 works comprising orchestral, chamber and vocal music; to date her music has been performed at the Proms twenty times and a large number of her works were published by houses such as Schott, Elkin and Carl Fischer. Although at the time several women had become famous as performers, it was rare for them to be recognised as composers. Barns died in 1948 and was buried at Highgate Cemetery in London.

O’er A Sunlit Meadow was originally published in 1919 by Edwin Ashdown, Ltd, London in the collection “Landscapes, four short pieces for piano”.
