Born in 1873, Ethel Barns studied at the Watford School of Music and later at the Royal Academy of Music in London before becoming famous as a violinist-composer. During her career Barns composed over 120 works comprising orchestral, chamber and vocal music; to date her music has been performed at the Proms twenty times and a large number of her works were published by houses such as Schott, Elkin and Carl Fischer. Although at the time several women had become famous as performers, it was rare for them to be recognised as composers. Barns died in 1948 and was buried at Highgate Cemetery in London.

Valse - Caprice is a 5 minute, advance standard work for violin and piano which would be an ideal recital work or encore for high level student and professional performers. It was first published by Robert Cocks & Co. in 1894 and later published by Schott.

American Patrol is a popular march written by Frank White (F.W.) Meacham in 1885. It incorporates both original musical themes by Meacham and melodies from American patriotic songs of the era such as

Columbia, the Gem of the Ocean and Dixie. Composed for piano, it was then arranged for wind band and published by Carl Fischer in 1891. Copyright was assigned to Meacham's widow, Cora, in 1912 and renewed in 1919.

Carol of the Bells is a popular Christmas carol, with music by Ukrainian composer Mykola Leontovych in 1914 and lyrics by Peter J. Wilhousky. The song is based on the Ukrainian folk chant Shchedryk.The music is in the public domain, Wilhousky's lyrics are however under copyright protection (owned by Carl Fischer Music). The music is based on a four-note ostinato and is in 3 4 time signature, with the B-flat bell pealing in 6 8 time. The carol is metrically bistable, and a listener can focus on either measure or switch between them. It has been adapted for many genres, including: classical, metal, jazz, country music, rock, trap, and pop. The piece also features in films, television shows, and parodies.

In 1911, Austrian composer Fritz Kreisler (1875-1962) wrote the Recitativo und Scherzo Caprice, Op. 6, and dedicated it to one of his good friends, EugÃ¨ne YsÃ¤ye. This caprice is one of the few works that he named with an opus number. Our Urtext Edition has used as its main source the first edition New York: Carl Fischer, 1911. Plate 29500. Copy preserved in Sibley Music Library. We have corrected spelling errors in the musical text, we also offer a new distribution of measures that facilitates the study and practice of the work. G.
