Brass Ensemble - Digital Download SKU: A0.999423 Composed by Carlo Gesualso. Arranged by Eric Wilson. Concert,Renaissance. Score and parts. 14 pages. Woodrow Edition #5798361. Published by Woodrow Edition (A0.999423). Carlo Gesualdo, Prince of Venosa, Musician and Murderer! That’s not a news headline (though it would be quite a good one) but the title of a book by composer Peter Warlock which I read avidly after first encountering the Italian composer in a lecture at the University of Liverpool in the 1980s. We were studying the Italian madrigal, which was not really my thing until our lecturer threw Moro Lasso into the mix. Its opening chords seemed so incongruous – unlike anything we had heard – and are as striking today as they must have been in 1611 when first published in Gesualdo’s 6th Book of Madrigals.More or less immediately after that lecture I arranged the piece for the Seras Brass Quintet which I had helped form. In those days the brass quintet repertoire was limited, and certainly didn’t include anything by Gesualdo! The arrangement really benefits from a church-like acoustic where you can make the most of the dramatic built-in silences. The tuba part lies quite high and is very playable on a trombone if need be. Even to modern ears there are some strange sounds and I trust that all the ‘wrong’ notes are Gesualdo’s rather than mine – do let me know if you think otherwise!

Concert Band - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.980056 Composed by Carlo Gesualdo da Venosa. Arranged by Kyle Skrivanek. Classical,Contest,Festival,Instructional,Renaissance. Score and parts. 38 pages. Kyle Skrivanek #2891019. Published by Kyle Skrivanek (A0.980056). Moro Lasso is a prime example of the advanced chromaticism employed by the late Italian Renaissance composer, Carlo Gesualdo. Gesualdo, a prince of Venosa, is infamously remembered for murdering his first wife and her lover. However, his legacy to the world of music is undeniable. His six books of madrigals employ harmonies which the world would not witness again until Wagner, some 200 years later. During the later part of his life it was rumored Gesualdo suffered from a deep depression, perhaps from guilt. This is reflected in the first line of this madrigal which translates to, I am dying, wretched, in my grief. This arrangement maintains all of the original material with some repetition for length and musical effect. It is playable by high school level bands.

Concert Band - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.980054 Composed by Carlo Gesualdo da Venosa. Arranged by Kyle Skrivanek. Classical,Contest,Festival,Instructional,Renaissance. Score and parts. 33 pages. Kyle Skrivanek #2891017. Published by Kyle Skrivanek (A0.980054). Ave Regina Caelorum is an a capella motet by the late Italian Renaissance composer, Carlo Gesualdo. Gesualdo, a prince of Venosa, is infamously remembered for murdering his first wife and her lover. However, his legacy to the world of music is undeniable. While his use of chromaticism is most associated with his madrigals, his religious works, such as this, are more diatonic. When he does employ dissonance and chromaticism it has a far more dramatic effect. This setting is playable by middle school bands and can be played with limited instrumentation. 2nd clarinet parts remain below the break and 2nd trumpet parts stay in a manageable range. It provides the opportunity to both teach expressive playing and introduce the idea of chromaticism to students

Small Ensemble Tenor Trombone,Tuba - Level 5 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1133387 Composed by Carlo Gesualdo. Arranged by William Combs. Baroque,Renaissance. Score and parts. 9 pages. Gordon Cherry #733541. Published by Gordon Cherry (A0.1133387). Tu Piangi, O Filli Mia (pub. 1613) is a secular madrigal written by Carlo Gesualdo da Venosa (1560-1613) for 5 voices (SAATB). This piece shows the harmonic modernism and text painting commonly seen in Gesualdo’s music to stunning effect. This arrangement by Dr. William Combs sets the piece for trombone quintet and would also work well in a large ensemble setting. The highest part has the option to be performed on tenor or alto trombone. Clefs used in this arrangement are ATBBB or TTBBB. This short piece has intense rubato sections with extremely modern dissonances for the time, juxtaposed with exuberant sections of highly technical flourishes. For moderately advanced players.
