The Carman's Whistle
This is the title of song from the Tudor era.The title refers to the occupation of carman (or carter, as we would say today). Carmen were known for their habit of whistling, which was supposed to calm their horses.
The most well known version is this one, by William Byrd.
Originally written for keyboard, I have arranged it for a brass ensemble (dectet: 10 players) of 3 trumpets (1st doubling on flugel horn), 2 horns in F, 2 trombones, bass trombone, euphonium and tuba. (Cues are provided to cover any missing players)
There is also some use of mute to vary the tonal quality.
Repeats are provided, as in the original, but it works equally well as a straight play through, without them.
Check out my other brass quintet arrangements which include Byrd's Pavane.
