The Arabian Dance is one of the movements from his Nutcracker Ballet, often separated into an orchestral suite featuring some of the individual dance pieces from the ballet. This arrangement is for SATBB ensemble, with a soprano part, an alto part, a tenor part, and two distinct bass parts. The primary melody lines through the piece are carried in the treble voices but do occasionally visit the lower voices with the tenor line switching between melody harmony and bass line parts frequently throughout. The two bass lines alternate with carrying a continuous eighth-note line and drone-like notes. The soprano and tenor parts do push the upper ranges sometimes but the other parts stick to fairly typical ranges. Overall, the piece should be performable by most intermediate groups. There is also a tambourine part for added interest.

My grandmother, Adriana Verdonk-Romijn, was born in 1923, on a ship that was first named Baronie then Spes Salutes. Her family lived on the ship which they used to transport cargo in and around the Netherlands. During World War II, they were carrying a load of straw and were spotted by ally aircraft. The pilots thought that it was a German boat and began firing. The straw caught fire, and to save as much of the boat as possible, the Romijn family pumped it full of water and sunk it. Later, they brought it up again and started to refurbish it. However, the local community was afraid that the Germans would attack via u-boats, and they decided to sink the ship at the mouth of the harbour. After the war, the ship was brought up for a second time and reinhabited by the Romijn family. In 1988 the ship was christened the Aldebaran by a new owner and is now a tourist attraction. This piece is not about these events, but rather, about the ship as it carried my family to various destinations. Viola and cello trade off carrying a percussive eighth note pulse and the bass line. The percussive line keeps the beat moving and helps the ensemble stay together, while emphasizing the syncopated vocal melodies carried by the violins. Score and parts are complete with bowings and rehearsal letters, and parts are all two pages to help avoid page turns for performances.

Published by Richard Hirsch (A0.1202804). I offer an original composition for solo acoustic guitar that I have carried with me over several decades and through several changes in living situation. I started working with the piece already back in the 1970s when I was living in Frankfurt/Main, Germany and kept developing it when I moved to Stockholm and from there to Gothenburg, Sweden. A first recording of the composition was made in a private studio just outside Gothenburg in 1987. I have only recently been able to transmit the piece to musical notation in preparation for publication.The piece has a relaxed nature and contains many repetitions of simple themes that are meant to evoke a sense of monotonous spaciousness. One musician who listened to the first recording said he thought it sounded minimalistic, which I thought was a good description, although at the time I was unaware that minimalism was a term used to describe a whole style of music. The piece has a rather meditative character in the first part, turning more rhythmic in the second part. The third part is a swing version of the first part and the piece ends with a return to the meditative straight first part. The piece is meant to be primitive in the sense of primordial and goes in something resembling a pentatonic scale based on A. The rhythmic second part should be played so that the guitar starts to hum an A tone, the humming carrying over into and through the more melodic sections. The composition has an organic development with slight variations in the basic themes as the piece progresses.Depending on the mood of the interpreting performer, the repetitions might be played in a different order or a different number of times. I seldom play the composition exactly the same every time myself. The piece has also worked as a basis for jam sessions with accompaniment of drums and a base, although the guitar had to have some sort of amplification. The piece can be played on either steel string or nylon string acoustic guitars, or electric guitars. I chose the title Big Drum because of the recurring base A that is a dominant feature of the piece, reminding me of the big drums played by people all over the world. The piece has a participatory character, especially in the more rhythmic and swing parts, inviting the listeners to clap, stamp their feet, or drum on whatever is available,As the notation is accompanied by tablature, I refrain from giving left hand fingering. The right hand fingering consists basically of base notes played by the thumb and treble notes played by alternating index and middle fingers in combination with the ring finger.

Amen. - St. Francis of Assisi's Prayer before the Crucifix NOTES from the composer: One year ago, I had the privilege of participating in the Leadership Pilgrimage to Assisi and Rome (2011) sponsored by the Franciscan Sisters of Perpetual Adoration, Franciscan Healthcare, and Viterbo University.  I carried with me, not only the responsibility of bringing back a hint of Francis’ lived experience to my students, but the desire to compose something wholly Franciscan. The San Damiano Cross is one of the most distinctive Franciscan images we have on campus.  The gentle Jesus that hangs on this 12th-century icon will forever be linked to Francis’ dramatic step from citizen to sainthood-welcoming his earnest prayer to enlighten the darkness of his heart.  The Basilica of Santa Chiara in Assisi holds both the San Damiano Cross and the remains of his confidante, St. Clare.  It seemed a good place to start getting serious. Copying the prayer in at least six different languages, I tucked it away in my travel books, not digging it out again until the following summer (2012).  The opening phrases in the piece came easily enough (Altissimo, glorioso Dio), but I stumbled through a handful of ideas before coming up with the mantra (illumine le tenebre…).  It made sense that Francis would joyfully address God singing forte (Altissimo and Signore), while quietly chanting his humble prayers for faith, hope, charity, and knowledge. The friendship between Francis and Clare can’t be missed, not only in the intermingling of SATB voices, but in the setting of che faccia lo tuo santo e verace comadamento (that I may carry out your holy and true command).  The phrase is sung only once by the women before the final return of the illumine chant (which is repeated throughout by the men).  Maybe I chanced on weaving some of Clare’s courage with Francis’ persistence into Illumina le tenebre, all while trying to compose something wholly Franciscan?   ---Mary Ellen Haupert, October 2012.
