It is synonymous with a gift that is given at Christmas, but also refers to a very popular musical genre in our own country of the Christmas season. This genre represents the quintessential musical expression of Venezuelan Christmas. Modesta Bor, our composition teacher, always instilled in us the cultivation of this genre in the repertoire of our choirs and as creative work, in order to preserve it from its disappearance before the overwhelming invasion of other musical genres strange to our traditional Christmas holidays. The best title I found for this work was that, Aguinaldo, since it is a Christmas musical gift. It can be sung a cappella, although can also be accompanied by our traditional cuatro. It was premiered under my direction in December 1992 by the Orfeón Universitario of the Central University of Venezuela, to whom it is dedicated.

The first of them, Danza (Dance), is inspired by a genre typical of Venezuela’s Western part, known as the zuliana dance. The second movement, Galope (Gallop), in the genre of pasaje, a waltz of a moderate tempo, typical of the Venezuelan plains. The third one, Frailejón, is a slow waltz where the stillness of the Venezuelan Andes is reflected. The fourth movement, 5/8, is in the merengue rhythm, a genre typical of Venezuela’s  central part. And the last one, Joropo porfiao, is in the joropo rhythm, a name designating different musical expressions of a quick ternary tempo, from different parts of our country. The name porfiao (stubborn) derives from the constant repetition of an alike melodic cell in the form of an obstinato.

In this version I have musicalized the corresponding text to the responsory, but adding the alleluia, which is typical of the antiphon. The motet passes in a pastoral atmosphere beholding the birth of Jesus. With this work, I have finally put music to the same set of texts used by Francis Poulenc for his Quatre motets pour le temps de Noël. The whole set is a tribute to his memory and his powerful influence on my training as a composer.
