They are generally dance-like in rhythm (mainly in 3/4 time) while depicting a variety of moods – joyful, sad, passionate, angry and pensive. I initially intended these pieces to be of moderate difficulty, so I could perform them, but inevitably they grew too virtuosic for my limited pianistic abilities.

Some portray the wildlife in the mountains (“Glacier Birds...�). Others extol the beauty of the Sierra (“Mountain Glory,� “Yosemite Falls�). One expresses the whimsical/temperamental personality of the author (“Ice!�). And the final letter (“Sequoia�) speaks reverently of the great trees, in a language both naturalistic and sacred. They are the “greatest light in the woods, the greatest light in the world.� The musical settings, especially in the piano accompaniment, are quite programmatic. Glacier birds scamper up and down the keyboard in tone clusters. “Icy� glissandi float off. The great trees take root in large, block chords, and waterfalls cascade down in scales.There is personality in the letters. The bond between John Muir and Mrs. Carr (whom he addresses formally) is one of great kinship- a blending of the souls, a “spiritual romance.� As he marvels at the beauty of the wilderness, he writes ardently, “I wish that you could see this...� When he learns that Mrs. Carr, a botanist (whose plants suffer from the frost), dislikes ice, he chides her, and creates a “mock argument� over the value of glacial ice.The songs begin with an ascent into the mountains. They close with the return to the coast, to the magnificent Sequoia trees, where John Muir camps for the night, in the company of a squirrel. Charmingly, he writes “therefore, my Carr, goodnight.�.

I thought of these as a lively appetizer to start a solo piano recital. As a young composer it is often tempting to (try to) to compose serious, heavy pieces, as if to prove our depth as artists. In these pieces I opted for the opposite route, attempting to bring a smile to the listeners' faces.

I was a Peace Corps Volunteer in Lesotho from 1995 to 1997 when I was in my early 20s. I wrote this work several years after returning to the United States. Each variation is based on a scene from Lesotho, some being an everyday activity, such as plowing fields or looking out over the mountains. The earlier variations are more light-hearted than the later variations, which deal with more serious issues including drought and illness. While all of the variations are based on the Lesotho National Anthem, an additional song, Mohololi, also appears in the later variations. I heard the song just once, at the funeral of a fellow Peace Corps Volunteer, Jeremy Rolfs, who died in a car accident in South Africa at the young age of 27. Jeremy and I had discussed composing an opera based on music and stories from Lesotho. While that project never came to fruition, I offer this work in his memory.

I had just turned 23 years old, and had been composing for only a short time when I wrote it. It is a simple, lyrical piece with an arpeggiated left-hand under a right-hand melody. My mother, who was my first piano teacher, enjoyed this piece and played it often. I offer this gentle lullaby in her memory.
