The first of its kind, this is a genuinely playable piano/vocal reduction of Largo al factotum,� the show-stopping first aria from Gioachino Rossini’s famous opera Il barbiere di Siviglia (The Barber of Seville). Most reductions of this aria pose a physical hazard to audition and other collaborative pianists who risk injury by trying to grab every fast repeated note and chord in this extremely long aria, nor do the repeated notes tend to come out properly or sound right on pianos compared to the string instruments for which they were written. With this reduction—which was specifically created to be more ergonomic at the piano and safer to get through on long audition-playing days—pianists may now enjoy playing this aria comfortably, without risking strain/injury. However, it’ll still be a tour de force for the baritone!Note that this score does not make any cuts to the aria; therefore, it is also suitable for recital settings without time limits.All Accessible Accompaniments, including this one, boast several unique features:1. Although this was to be a fiftieth year jubilee, the parish had been in existence for many decades prior, and many of the choir members had been parishioners since the construction of the new building and some even before.Myidea was to ask the choir members to participate in this piece by expressing their thoughts regarding their devotion to Mary, and from their writing I would assemble their words into a lyric.Initially, A Prayer to Mary was composed as a unison/octave setting, after which I arranged it for SATB with piano accompaniment. Most important in the performance of this piece is to approach it with a generous amount of expression and rubato in several areas so that the meanings of the individual lyric phrases become meaningful and not just words.I have included chord symbols in the score for those who wish to personalize their own accompaniments; however, chord symbols do not, and in several cases cannot capture the exact content of the accompaniment. This sequence and melody was inspired by a poem written by a friend called Otto Wanke, who was going through the teenage angst of splitting up with the first girl he loved. The title (Feuer und Wasser = Fire and Water) refers to the idea that these two elements are incompatible, but the music (in minor mode with occasional hints of Dorian) is a simple lament rather than a musical description of the elements in question. The music was originally written as a song for alto voice with classical guitar accompaniment (to which I have added an English singing translation). It has since been rearranged for various instruments with guitar (cor anglais, flute, clarinet, viola, violin) and also as a more sophisticated version for flute quartet and for wind quartet. In all cases the pdf file contains score and parts. The sound samples are electronic previews, except the original song which is performed by the composer. The arrangements for guitar solo were written in two-part counterpoint and followed the strophic form of the folk songs involved. The melodic transcriptions of the folk melodies were not based in any particular performance, also avoiding the elaborate in many cases instrumental introductions associated with these songs. Thus, only the vocal melodies in a general recognizable version were presented. This new presentation for instrumental duets will stay with this generalised melodic version (without exploiting the instrumental introductions), but the form from strophic will become ternary (ABA).
