Go Down Moses is an Afro-American Spiritual Song. This version is arranged as a duet for one Violin and one Cello.

Go Down Moses was first published in 1853 after Afro-American Contraband regiments sang it during the American Civil War. In the recording age Go Down Moses was made famous by Paul Robeson and Louis Armstrong. William Faulkner named a novel after the song and there is a memorable performance in the 1941 film, Sullivan’s Travels.

Go Down Moses is arranged in a key and range best suited to the instruments. There are four verses, one slow and stately, the other three in a gospel swing style with constant variations. Click the link above to listen to a full Youtube performance of the Clarinet version of this duet.

The composer writes: I have subtitled this single-movement piano trio “The Lotos-Eaters†because it is a programmatic work, based on Alfred Lord Tennyson’s 1842 poem of the same title. Tennyson’s image of a land where all cares are forgotten seemed to me an apt subject for a lyrical and tranquil composition, and many images from the poem are “translated†quite literally into musical ideas. Tonally static, the trio is constructed in an extended arc form. Tempo, volume and intensity gradually increase, and textures become denser, until the climax of the piece – at which point these processes are reversed.

Chopin composed his best-known Nocturne in E-flat major, Op. 9, No. 2 when he was around twenty years old. This well-known nocturne is in rounded binary form (A, A, B, A, B, A) with coda, C. The A and B sections become increasingly ornamented with each recurrence. Nocturne in E-flat major opens with a legato melody, mostly played piano, containing graceful upward leaps which becomes increasingly wide as the line unfolds. This melody is heard again three times during the piece. With each repetition, it is varied by ever more elaborate decorative tones and trills.

This arrangement for Cello with Piano Accompaniment reflects faithfully the original.
