Bassoon,Clarinet,Double Bass,Flute,Horn,Oboe - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1293743 Composed by Erik Satie. Arranged by Ray Thompson. 20th Century,Chamber. 16 pages. RayThompsonMusic #884220. Published by RayThompsonMusic (A0.1293743). Arranged wind dectet/bass (double wind quintet)A taster of the opening music for Erik Satie's Ballet Parade.Choral and Prelude of the red curtainOther scores to follow. Background info:Parade is a ballet choreographed by Leonide Massine, with music by Erik Satie and a one-act scenario by Jean Cocteau. The ballet was composed in 1916–17 for Sergei Diaghilev's Ballets Russes. The ballet premiered on Friday, May 18, 1917, at the Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris, with costumes and sets designed by Pablo Picasso, choreography by Léonide Massine (who danced), and the orchestra conducted by Ernest Ansermet. The ballet was remarkable for several reasons. It was the first collaboration between Satie and Picasso, and also the first time either of them had worked on a ballet, thus making it the first time either collaborated with Diaghilev and the Ballets Russes. The plot of Parade incorporated and was inspired by popular entertainments of the period, such as Parisian music-halls and American silent-films.Much of the settings used in Parade's plot occurred outside of the formal Parisian theater, depicting the streets of Paris. The plot reproduces various elements of everyday life such as the music hall and fairground. Before Parade, the use of popular entertainment materials was considered unsuitable for the elite world of the ballet. The plot of Parade composed by Cocteau includes the failed attempt of a troupe of performers to attract audience members to view their show. Some of Picasso's Cubist costumes were in solid cardboard, allowing the dancers only a minimum of movement. The score contained several noise-making instruments (typewriter, foghorn, an assortment of milk bottles, pistol, and so on), which had been added by Cocteau (somewhat to the dismay of Satie). It is supposedthat such additions by Cocteau showed his eagerness to create a succès de scandale, comparable to that of Igor Stravinsky's Le Sacre du Printemps which had been premiered by the Ballets Russes some years before, and caused no less scandal.Although Parade was quite revolutionary, bringing common street entertainments to the elite, being scorned by audiences and being praised by critics, nonetheless many years later Stravinsky could still pride himself in never having been topped in the matter of succès de scandale. The ragtime contained in Parade would later be adapted for piano solo and attained considerable success as a separate piano piece. The finale is a rapid ragtime dance in which the whole cast [makes] a last desperate attempt to lure the audience in to see their showThe premiere of the ballet resulted in a number of scandals. One faction of the audience booed, hissed, and was very unruly, nearly causing a riot before they were drowned out by enthusiastic applause. Many of their objections were focused on Picasso's cubist design, which was met with cries of sale boche.

Brass Ensemble - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.808703 Composed by Guy d'Hardelot (1858 – 1936). Arranged by F. Leslie Smith. Holiday,Romantic Period,Spiritual,Wedding. Score and parts. 18 pages. Sweetwater Brass Press #6072651. Published by Sweetwater Brass Press (A0.808703).      This song is a great piece to play for a general concert. But it really shines in matrimonial settings. The fact is: No wedding is complete without the performance of Because.     Helen Guy, the daughter of an English sea captain and a French singer, was born at Château d'Hardelot in France. She entered the Paris Conservatory at age 15, and in her early 20s composed a musical setting for Victor Hugo’s Sans toi, which gained some popularity. She composed over 300 songs using the name Guy d'Hardelot. She was also a noted piano accompanist. After marrying W.I. Rhodes, she settled in London and taught singing. As a composer, she is best remembered for Because (Parce Que), for which she wrote both the music and the French words. It was first published in 1902 with English lyrics by Edward Teschemacher and has since been recorded many times by many different artists.     This arrangement was derived from the 1902 Chappell & Co. score in C major for piano and voice. For the most part, however, the musical setting is original and different. Throughout most of the piece, Horn in F carries the melody with Trombone and Tuba providing an arpeggio accompaniment. Trumpets 1 and 2 play a syncopation figure for the opening and the end but during the majority of the arrangement they provide an antiphonal response to the melody. The opening is marked Poco Adagio with a suggested metronome setting of 76, but the tempo does vary rather frequently. All notes are well within the range of each instrument; e.g., B-flat Trumpets’ highest note is G at the top of their staff, while Tuba’s lowest note is A below the staff. All-in-all, this arrangement is a beautiful and poignant setting for an old favorite, a real crowd pleaser.     Completed in 2020, performance time for Because runs about 3 minutes, 22 seconds. The arranger, Les Smith, will be happy to provide substitute parts (for example, treble clef baritone for trombone) at no charge; contact him directly at lessmith61@bellsouth.net. For more arrangements by Les, enter Sweetwater Brass Press (without the quotation marks) in the search box. (Also, purchase of this piece entitles you to your choice of another of his arrangements at no charge; send a copy of your purchase receipt directly to him at lessmith61@bellsouth.net.)

Its diversity reflects the small regional and cultural spaces of Switzerland. Influences from other European countries have also shaped this kind of music since the early 19th century. Polka and Mazurka have their roots in Poland, the Scottish in Scotland. The music has been passed on by word of mouth or has been written down in musicians’ notebooks.Between 1940 and 1960, the ethnomusicologist Hanny Christen travelled through Switzerland and collected thousands of melodies from the period between 1800 and 1960. The musicians played or sang in front of her. Some permitted her to write off their own hand-written dance booklets in full. In 1956, Hanny Christen began to record this music with a tape recorder. It is thanks to her that over 12,000 instrumental dance movements of Switzerland and many other pieces of tradition (costumes, biographies, musical instruments etc.) were saved from being forgotten. The instruments used in traditional folk music vary depending on the type of dance and region. Flutes are more or less non-existent. The author would like to fill a gap with this publication. She has therefore adapted one folk dance per canton from the Hanny Christen-collection* for two flutes. The pieces from the cantons of Basel City, Thurgau and Geneva do not come from this source, though. The melodies from the other 23 cantons are taken unchanged from the collection. The second voice was not always composed quite traditional. The melody follows - if possible - a contrapuntal melody of its own and is directed to the flute (difficulty grade 3 +).The editor, Helene Schulthess, is a flutist with a wide repertoire. She lives in Switzerland. She performs as a soloist, makes chamber music and is active as a music teacher. She is involved in various musical projects (www.helene-schulthess.ch).* Swiss Folk Music Collection. The dance music of Switzerland of the 19th and first half of the 20th century. From the estate of Hanny Christen. Edited by Fabian Müller under the auspices of the Society for Folk Music in Switzerland (GVS/SMPS). Music print. Mülirad, Zürich 2002.
