It was composed by the German composer Georg Friedrich Händel. Although he used this tune as early as 1705, in the oratorio Il Trionfo del Tempo e del Disinganno – Lascia la spina, cogli la rosa, with the libretto by Giacomo Rossi a masterpiece was created – Lascia ch'io pianga. The soprano part was based on the film Farinelli.
