It was originally published in 1877 in a version for two equal voices with organ. In 1890, Gounod rearranged it for soli, four-part mixed choir and organ and added the words Aux chapelles to the title. This piece opens with solo male voices singing a simple yet very lyrical melody. Then the four-part choir enters, repeating and expanding this melody upwards to its summit, after which a descending cascade leads back downwards to the main melody. The Agnus Dei then ends with the pleas for peace uttered in pianissimo chords.
