Charles Gounod war eine Ausnahmeerscheinung in der französischen Musikgeschichte des 19. Jahrhunderts und einer der führenden Komponisten des Second Empire. Gounod war sehr religiös, im Alter wandte er sich wieder verstärkt der Kirchenmusik zu. Seine Oratorien im lyrischen Stil waren sehr erfolgreich. Am bekanntesten jedoch dürfte die „Méditation sur le 1er prélude de Bach“ sein – eine Melodie, die er 1852 auf das Präludium C-Dur des 1. Teils des Wohltemperierten Klaviers von J. S. Bach für Violine und Klavier schrieb und 1859 mit dem Text des „Ave Maria“ unterlegte. Dieses „Ave Maria von Bach/Gounod“ wurde zu einem der weltweit populärsten Stücke der klassischen Musik. Auch „Jésus von Nazareth“ hat eine fließende, bisweilen schwerelose Melodik, die frei von großen Sprüngen und extremen Lagen ist. Die Stimme kommt durch die einfache, sich unterordnende melodische Begleitung zur Geltung.

Certainly the famous Méditation over the first prelude from Bach’s Well-tempered Clavichord – with the subsequent addition of the words to Ave Maria – has become Charles Gounod’s best-known piece. In the 19th Century, however, one of his other compositions was also very popular: Hymne à Sainte Cécile, a ‘Méditation religieuse’ – in the original version with orchestra (1865) dedicated to his friend Jean Delphin Alard. Gounod had already written one work in honour of the Blessed Cecilia, patron saint of church music, a Mass that became very popular. In contrast, this Hymne is instrumental, with the violin ‘singing’ a lovely melody over a harp-like accompaniment of arpeggios. (Gounod subsequently wrote another setting with the text ‘Ave verum’.) Plate no. 19323, published in 1868.

Mors et vita is an oratorio in three parts by Charles Gounod premiered at the Birmingham Festival in 1885. It was conceived as a sequel to La rédemption (1882). The 1886 Paris premiere again featured Jean Baptiste Faure. Gounod considered this oratorio, and its predecessor La rédemption (1882) as his greatest achievements. JUDEX is a part of this important work and now you have it in a friendlier tonality (G) than the original written by Gounod (the key of Gb). The music remains unchanged. It is a beautiful work, very accessible and suitable for concerts openings, service preludes, recitals. It is an important work of the orchestral repertoire and your orchestra needs to play it at some point along the way. You and your orchestra will enjoy playing this work of unique beauty.

Charles Gounod's Ave Maria on the First Prelude of J. S. Bach is here arranged for voice, string quartet, and harpsichord by Joel Jacklich (A.S.C.A.P.). The obligatory harpsichord plays Bach's original Prelude No. 1 in C Major from the Well-Tempered Clavier (transposed to F major) while the strings provide a harmonization to Gounod's melody. Violin I doubles the vocal part, so the piece can be performed as just an instrumental work.

Charles Gounod composed his Ave Maria adding his new vocal line over Johann Sebastian Bach's Prelude No. 1 in C Major from the Well-Tempered Clavier. This version (in G major) is for string quartet alone. A vocalist can be added, as the first violin part doubles Gounod's original vocal line. This divides Bach's original arpeggios between the viola and second violin. These two parts are modestly difficult. Fingerings have been provided for the more awkward arpeggios. Perfect for weddings, and funerals.
