Étude. Composed by Charles Valentin Alkan. Edited by Robert Schafer and Wilhelm Ohmen. This edition: Sheet music. (c) 2020 Schott Music GmbH & Co. KG, Mainz. Classical. Downloadable. Op. 27. 16 pages. Schott Music - Digital #Q53314. Published by Schott Music - Digital (S9.Q53314).

As a young virtuoso, the Frenchman Charles-Valentin Alkan was one of the leading pianists in Paris. Between 1839 and 1843, for unknown reasons, he withdrew completely from public view. On his celebrated return to the concert stage in 1844, according to newspaper reports, Liszt, Chopin, Sand and Dumas, amongst others, were in the audience. In the same year he also wrote ‘Le Chemin de Fer’, which was probably the first musical representation of a railway. Like his popular ‘Douze Études dans les tons mineurs’ op. 39, this study is also characterized by extreme technical requirements. ‘Le Chemin de Fer’ was published by Schott in 1845 (plate number 8072).

By Adolf Gutmann. By Adolf Gutmann. Arranged by Zellev. 19th Century,Broadway,Classical,Musical/Show,Religious,Romantic Period. Score. 6 pages. Zellev Music #767081. Published by Zellev Music (A0.1166699).

Adolf Gutmann was born in Heidelberg. He came to Paris in 1834,[4] at the age of 15, to study with Chopin, becoming one of the composer's favourites.[5] He performed in concert with Chopin, Liszt, Charles-Valentin Alkan and Pierre-Joseph Zimmerman, Alkan's transcription of part of Beethoven's Seventh Symphony at a concert of 1838.[6] Gutmann was also the dedicatee of Chopin's Scherzo, Op. 39, published in 1839.[7]

Gutmann acted as copyist for a number of Chopin's works, and acted as a courier to take Chopin's letters to his family in Warsaw. Gutmann's own set of Etudes (his Op. 12) is dedicated to Chopin.[6] He was present at Chopin's death bed and preserved the glass from which Chopin took his last drink of water. Both he and Alkan were bequeathed the notes that Chopin had compiled in preparation for a piano teaching method. Gutmann died in La Spezia.

Composed by Thomas Oboe Lee. 20th Century,21st Century,Chamber,Classical,Contemporary. Score. 38 pages. Thomas Oboe Lee #961575. Published by Thomas Oboe Lee (A0.1377886).

I was recently invited to a farewell cocktail party for Robert Levin and Ya Fei Chuang on the occasion of their move from Cambridge, Massachusetts, to Salzburg where Ya Fei got a job teaching at the Mozarteum. John Harbison wrote a little piano duet for them, and it inspired me to looking into writing a grand duo for two pianos.

Looking around, I discovered that Charles-Valentin Alkan (1813-1888) wrote a work with the title, Grand Duo Concertant for violin and piano. I immediately launched into a search for Alkan the composer and I discovered that he was a contemporary of Chopin, Franz Liszt, George Sand, and Victor Hugo. Like Liszt and Chopin, he wrote tons of music for the piano, and he was at the cusp of fame when he withdrew from society and remained a recluse for the last years of his life.

Aside from the Grand Duo Concertant, I found his 49 Ésquisses to be especially lovely and beguiling.

My work for two pianos is based on ideas from both works. I especially thought the beginning of the GDC fascinating because the LH sounded like a walking jazz bass line. That got me started on the Prelude, and then I organized the remaining movements of the work around the GDC with materials I found attractive in the 49 ésquisses.

I. Prélude ... Assez animé
II. La Vision ... Assez lentement
III. La Staccatissimo ... Allegro, TRIO
IV. Barcarollette ... Lentement
V. L'enfer ... Lentement, Presto
VI. Grâces ... Assez lentement
VII. Contredanse ... Vivace
VIII. Petit Air Dolente ... Adagietto
IX. Fuguette ... Très carrément

This work is dedicated to Jung-A and Min on the occasion of their wedding ceremony in December of 2023.

By Tori Amos. By Charles-Valentin Alkan, Claude Debussy, Domenico Scarlatti, Enrique Granados, Erik Satie, Felix Bartholdy Mendelssohn, Franz Schubert, Frederic Chopin, Johann Sebastian Bach, Modest Petrovich Mussorgsky, and Robert Schumann. Arranged by Todd J. Scallan. Baroque,Classical,Romantic Period. Score. 48 pages. Todd J. Scallan #1048169. Published by Todd J. Scallan (A0.1470460).

Echoes in Variation brings together the classical inspirations for the musical themes in Night of Hunters – a song cycle by Tori Amos. The songs from Night of Hunters are mainly variations on the classical pieces presented here as arrangements for solo piano. Each arrangement is faithful to the original piano score, but with cleaner formatting and clearer performance directions.

This collection offers an excellent introduction to a range of brilliant composers spanning the 18th through early 20th centuries:
- Alkan: Song of the Madwoman on the Seashore, Preludes Op. 31, No. 8
- Granados: An?oranza from 6 Pieces on Spanish Folk Songs
- Satie: Gnossienne No. 1
- Granados: Spanish Dance No. 2 from 12 Spanish Dances
- Chopin: Nocturne Op. 9, No. 1
- Schubert: Andantino from Piano Sonata in A major, D. 959
- Mendelssohn: Venetian Boat Song, from Songs Without Words Book 2, Op. 30
- Schumann: Theme in E-flat Major for Piano (Ghost Variations), WoO 24
- J. S. Bach: Siciliana from Flute Sonata in E-flat major, BWV 1031
- Mussorgsky: The Old Castle from Pictures at an Exhibition
- Gregorian chant: Salve Regina
- Scarlatti: Sonata in F minor, K. 466
- J. S. Bach: Prelude in C minor, BWV 999
- Debussy: The Girl with the Flaxen Hair, Preludes Book 1, No. 8

As a complement to these pieces, solo piano arrangements for the songs from Tori Amos’ Night of Hunters are also available.

Composed by Angela Salvaggione. Classical,Contest,Festival,Instructional. Score and part. 8 pages. Angela Salvaggione #905294. Published by Angela Salvaggione (A0.1316569).

This piece should be fast and exciting, with very precise counting and rhythm. Imagine an old-time steam locomotive chugging down the tracks. Listen for the train whistles in the piano part. By the very end, the ride is over and the train is pulling into its final stop at the station.

This piece is very much influenced by the piano piece Le Chemin de Fer, by Charles-Valentin Alkan. I highly recommend you find a recording of this piano piece to listen to. Don’t try to play Train Ride that fast though! My recording of the bassoon piece is at quarter note at 164. You need not play it that fast. So long as your playing has energy, very solid steady beat, and tongued notes are clear, that will carry the feel of the piece.

Time: ca. 2:00-3:00, depending on tempo choice

Key: D minor

Range: D2-Eb4

I would use this piece with my second or third year students. Younger students should play it on the slower side. More advances students can aim for a faster tempo and use this as a great opportunity to work on keeping fast eighth note passages even.

Once the student has purchased this piece, an adjudicator’s copy may be made. Teachers may purchase individual copies for each student’s use. Studio licensing is not available.
