This is a dazzling piece of choral music, for the choir looking for something with wow factor. Arranged by the composer from the third song in his Idylls cycle, the music assimilates the concept of freedom in a way that is dazzling in its effect: conventionally modal choir harmonies yet with total fluidity of modulation; having a regular metre and yet always trying to break free from it; a piano accompaniment that is a work of art in its own right (and needs to be played as such), a rippling tapestry of sound whose rhythms cut across those of the choir yet whose harmonies complement the voices perfectly. Together the piano and choir demonstrate more clearly than could words alone, that freedom and diversity working together can achieve great things. This is a celebration of liberty and its place in the civilisations of the United Kingdom, the United States of America and all other countries where freedom of expression is valued and inspires people to majestic works. The main melody is set is 8/8 time which naturally divides into groups of 3+2+3. The middle section is at first contrapuntal then more lyrical and in 4/4. It is more suitable for experienced singers. The work is scored for SAT choir with keyboard accompaniment which makes it ideal for high school and college choirs with no bass section. There are no divisi sections, but several opportunities for optional solos and the piano part is of medium difficulty but could be managed by any competent pianist. This piece would be ideal for a Christmas concert or part of a Christmas service. The vocal ranges are as follows: Soprano C4-G5; Alto A3-D4; Tenor C3-F4.
