This is a ghostly and humorous tale of Tom Pearce's old grey mare and the motley collection of Bill Brewer, Jan Stewar, Peter Gurney, Peter Davey, Daniel Widdon, Harry Hawke and old Uncle Tom Cobley who all endeavour to go to Widicombe Fair with the horse as their means of transport. The melody is mainly in the tenors and basses at the beginning, and there is a minor section for two verses in the middle. In the original song there are up to 9 verses with several variations, but this arrangement cuts it down to 8 verses which is still almost 4 minutes running time! A simple piano, guitar, or accordion accompaniment can be added by playing the chord symbols and the choir should be encouraged to add vocal effects to bring this song (and possibly the old grey mare) alive.

In the first chapter of Paul’s letter to the Colossians, we discover the next known Hymn to Christ right after his introductory passages, beginning at the 15th verse. Paul opens this letter with a blessing, then immediately flows to one of the 1st century hymns, which I have called, The Icon of the Invisible God. The lyrics of this hymn are declarative, bold and illuminating as to whom the Christ figure is-the icon, the very image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation. The text makes it abundantly clear that Jesus is the authority; that He was there before all things, that He created all things, and that through Him all things hold together.  This anthem is composed for SATB choir with Pipe Organ accompaniment. The meter is set to 6/8 time, with a rhythm tempo of Totally Alive; which is one actual definition of the word Holy. The anthem starts at a good clip (♪=100). The key is G Major, with an incidental and occasional flatted 5th (Dâ™­) as a surprise-landing befitting to the text presented, as if to say, This is so amazing, how can it be? The flatted 5th gives the piece it's own identity and causes the listener to stand up and take notice whenever it occurs. When the hymn's lyrics glide into the all-important resolution, having made peace through the blood of the cross, the song retards and lands on a surprising musical cadence, the sixth chord (E Major).  In this piece, the pipe organ is boldly featured as it supports and under girds the musical line, occasionally trumpeting its own victorious motifs and adding some contrapuntal elements, such as this duplet motif, in the pedal line. The final lyrics about Christ having reconciled everything to Himself, whether things on the earth or in the heavens, finish the piece with a great, ‘High-Church’ choral ending.

The work continues in a jazz waltz feel until a sudden stop when the piano sets up a funky back beat feel and the music really starts to kick. A key change near the end moves the energy up again for a really big ending. It will take more than one rehearsal to put it together but it’s worth it to see their smiles of appreciation.

In an anecdote he recounted in 1960, prominent astronomer Harlow Shapley claimed to have inspired Fire and Ice in an encounter with Frost a year before the poem was published. Frost asked Shapley how the world will end, and Shapley responded that either the sun will explode and incinerate the Earth, or the Earth will somehow escape this fate only to end up slowly freezing in deep space. The sonnet was written to raise money for the construction of the Statue of Liberty's pedestal and has graced the entrance to the Statue of Liberty in New York Harbor since 1945. The chorus for this work is adapted from the Lazarus poem, while the verses are new text written by the composer. Duration ca. 3 minutes. Take Up the Cross is based on Christ's admonition from Matthew 16. Here scored for SATB choir with occasional divisi and keyboard (organ or piano), it has a definite Middle Eastern flavor. A strong tenor solo is desired toward the beginning, but it may be sung by a tenor section and augmented with altos if necessary. This piece has many opportunities for dramatic expression and will provide an effectively good challenge in a worship service or on a concert stage.
