Having completed and published here a 3-part setting of Arabia's Magi sought Him and Ubi est, I came back to the computer a few months later to be reminded that I had started the project with a 4-part (SATB) setting of Ubi est?  I therefore reverse-engineered an SATB setting of Arabia's Magi to complete this short Epiphany set using my original English words for the first anthem and the Latin words of Matthew's Gospel (Ch.2, v2) for the second. Lasting around a couple of minute or so altogether, and with nothing to trap the unwary singer, these are ideal either in a Lessons and Carols service (which extends the narrative to include the Magi), as dedicated Epiphany diptych, or for use in a concert.  N.B. pages 2 & 3 are sample pages only - to save paper, please print just pages (1? &) 4-7.

It is predominantly used as a hymn for Good Friday usually in a setting by John Ireland who evidently composed it over lunch one day. This is a completely new SATB setting of Crossman’s wonderful text by Colin Kirkpatrick. In this setting there are opportunities for alto and tenor solos though they can be sung tutti if more appropriate. The keyboard part is essential though there is an a capella section in the middle. The highest note in the soprano part is one A flat above the treble staff. This is an accessible arrangement with rich harmonies and soaring melodic lines. It is sure to be a success at Easter occasions. Other SATB titles in this series of three Easter canticles are Alone Thy goes forth, O Lord (Text by Peter Abelard 1079-1142) and A Time to Watch, A time to Pray (Text by John Mason Neale 1818-1866. In the audio sample, soprano is played by the flute, alto by the oboe, tenor by the clarinet and bass by the bassoon.

Charles Wesley’s (1707-1788) Advent hymn, “Come, Thou Long-Expected Jesus,� from Hymns for the Nativity of our Lord (1744), reflects the dual nature of Advent for Christians, in that it recalls the first coming and incarnation of the Messiah while also anticipating His return.Each stanza presents a different idea: Stanza 1, the longing for freedom from sin and fear; Stanza 2, attributes of or names for Christ; Stanza 3, the Messiah's birth, kingdom, and purpose; and Stanza 4, a prayer for Christ's rule in believers' hearts. Among the Scriptures referenced in the hymn are 2 Corinthians 4:14, Revelation 3:21, Isaiah 61:1-2, Luke 4:18-19, and Romans 6:22. In this setting of Wesley’s text to an original tune, a short introduction is followed by verse 1, presented by women’s voices (soprano, alto) and verse 2, presented by men’s voices (tenor, bass).
