Choral Choir (SATB) - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1084969 By Andrew Orgee. By Andrew Orgee. Christmas,Classical,Sacred. Octavo. 9 pages. Andrew Orgee #689093. Published by Andrew Orgee (A0.1084969). This is a setting of one of the earliest known Christmas Carol texts in the English language - I Syng of a Mayden - believed to be sung to music around the 15th century. It is scored for Soprano, Alto, Tenor, and Bass choir with church organ and is written for semi-professional choirs. The opening plainsong and modal harmony set a medieval and reverential tone for the piece. This develops into an outpouring a joy and praise for the Virgin Mary and her child represented by full choral harmony with organ pedals.

Choral Choir (SATB) - Digital Download SKU: A0.973048 Composed by Francis Kayali. 20th Century,Contemporary. Octavo. 19 pages. Francis Kayali #6230277. Published by Francis Kayali (A0.973048). The Gift to Sing is a poem by James Weldon Johnson (1871-1938) published in 1917. The central theme of the text is one of optimism and resilience, using the power of song – meaning, more broadly, art or any kind of artful, heightened expression – to overcome adversity. Although the poem can be interpreted broadly to pertain to any kind of struggle, it is likely that Johnson, as a civil-rights activist was alluding more specifically to the oppression African-Americans in the United States, a struggle that continues to this day, in 2020. I composed this setting in September of 2020, right after the Black Lives Matter protests that took place that summer, so current events played a role in this interpretation on my part as well. If one reads the poem as pertaining the continued struggle of African Americans, some passages may come across as ambiguous. For instance, I brood not over the broken past should not be taken as suggesting that the horrors of the past should be forgotten, but as an injunction that the memory of these horrors should not discourage us or diminish our resolve to work toward overcoming the injustices. The musical inspiration for the opening of the piece comes from the song Lonesome Valley, which starts with a pentatonic melodic gesture. The pentatonic scale is often used in African American Spirituals, Christian hymns, and folksongs (e.g., Swing Low, Sweet Chariot, Amazing Grace, How Can I Keep from Singing?, Red River Valley, Oh Shenandoah). The more rhythmic parts take inspiration from the African-American spiritual tradition, as found for instance in the choral music of Moses Hogan (1957-2003). Meanwhile, the tenor solo at the end, is intended to be very loud, bright, and without the pronounced vibrato one would find in a Western operatic style. This kind of bright and intense vocal sound is not unfamiliar to most listeners, who may have encountered it in places as varied as Sacred Harp singing, the opening of the Lion King soundtrack, or the Muslim call to prayer.

Choral Choir,Choral (SATB) - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.778383 Composed by Claudio Monteverdi. Arranged by Thomas R. Vozzella. Baroque,Renaissance,Sacred,Standards. 8 pages. Thomas R. Vozzella #6234743. Published by Thomas R. Vozzella (A0.778383). Claudio Monteverdi (1567-1643) composed Adoramus te, Christe the year the Pilgrims landed at Plymouth Rock (1620). He was an Italian composer, string player and choirmaster. A composer of both secular and sacred music, and a pioneer in the development of opera, he is considered a crucial transitional figure between the Renaissance and the Baroque periods of music history. After the loss of his wife and subsequent years of depression, Monteverdi found his own renaissance in the Basilica of Venice as their music director. He invented opera and poured himself into church music, eventually becoming a member of a monastic order after surviving the plague. His exquisite small pieces were a great part of his complete works. As he aged, they reflected his journey through the stages of faith.

Choral Choir,Choral (SATB) - Level 2 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1315705 By Christopher Alexander. By Christopher Alexander. A Cappella,Christmas. 8 pages. Christopher Alexander #904451. Published by Christopher Alexander (A0.1315705). This deceptively simple Christmas tune is rich with its nontraditional key signature, homophonic texture, and harmonic suspensions.  It can be performed with or without piano accompaniment, making it accessible for singers to perform anywhere.  Set like a benediction, this work would be perfect as a concert closer for your entire choir department to sing together at the end of your holiday concert.  The text by John Whittier reminds us to be thankful for the Christmas season and share that same sentiment with others “all the year throughâ€.Also available in: SAB, SSAA, TTBB, and Unison/Two-Part.

Choral Choir,Choral (SATB divisi) - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1304530 Composed by Lloyd Buck. Advent,Christmas,Early Music,Latin,Sacred. 3 pages. Lloyd Buck #893998. Published by Lloyd Buck (A0.1304530). Dixit Maria was written for Portishead Summer Singers in 2006 to be premiered in a service of Nine Lessons and Carols. The Latin text translates as:Mary said to the Angel: Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord, let it be done to me, according to your word. The work is written in four parts, but splits into eight for a short section. It is based around the key of F# major, but modulates to other keys, some of which are unexpected. There are two big climaxes, and the music dies away at the end as Mary understands the meaning of the angel's words. Dixit Maria takes inspiration from the intricate and rich textures of the Renaissance era, while infusing it with the harmonic depth and complexity of more contemporary music.
