Honoring the composer’s Ojibwe ancestors, the piece sets all of the English text and a few key words of the Anishinaabemowin text from the bilingual poem that beautifully captures a glimpse into the natural and celestial wonders of the Ojibwe world. The music reflects a taste of the syncopated embellished singing, pentatonic melodies, and steady drumbeat characteristic of Ojibwe music. The electronic track provides both a compelling rhythmic foundation and a fantastical sonic representations of the moon, nebulae, supernovae, aurora borealis, and the forests of the Ojibwe lands.In addition to being the director of EQI, Margaret Noodin is an Assistant Professor in the English Department and American Indian Studies. Program note.The greatest challenge of the Stabat Mater text is to figure out how to set twenty stanzas of pain and suffering without making it all sound too depressing. So, before I began composing, I looked at a number of scores and recordings of Stabat Mater by various composers: DesPrez, Palestrina, Pergolesi, Boccherini, Vivaldi, Haydn, Dvorak, Rossini, Poulenc, Szymanowski, Penderecki, et al. It was fascinating to see what each composer did with regard to text setting: the variety of musical textures from movement to movement, different approaches to the use of fast or allegro music to offset the mood of the text, solo versus choral sections, etc. Each composer took a very personal and creative approach to the task. It was a fascinating study! After weeks of listening and scrutinizing, I decided to divide the twenty-stanza text into six sections. The lyrics for this 4-minute polyphonic choral piece are an English translation from an ancient Buddhist sutra called the Larger Sutra on Amida Buddha (a.k.a. Sukhavati Vyuha Sutra), delivered by Shakyamuni Buddha some 2,500 years ago. In it we hear the Buddha extolling the great saving Light of Amida Buddha, the transcendental savior of all suffering beings. Intoning the 12 resplendent Lights of Amida, the music goes through the circle of 5ths in rapid modulation in the middle portion of the piece. The music is completely diatonic (with some unorthodox voice-leading), starting and ending in B-flat Major but proceeding through many modulations. The accompanying MP3 recording is computer-generated.

The familiar melody is now restructured into the gently asymmetrical 3+2+2 rhythm of a 7/8 meter. The music flows out, with that slight asymmetry giving an attractive lilt to the well-known tune. As with the rhythmic structure, the harmony is also reconsidered. Sonorities from related tonalities appear, providing new colors to enhance the well-known theme. The choral parts are attractive and singable, each part having a turn at the melody. Suitable for an intermediate to intermediate/advanced choir.
