SATB choir, wind quintet and string quartet or piano - Medium - Digital Download SKU: MQ.1.3438-E Composed by Z. Randall Stroope. Advanced/Collegiate. Secular, 21st Century, Creation/Nature. Score & instrument part. 24 pages. Duration 8 minutes, 25 seconds. Galaxy Music Corporation - Digital #1.3438-E. Published by Galaxy Music Corporation - Digital (MQ.1.3438-E). English.Northwest Passage is a set of “poetic landscapes” that reflects on three elements of the great Northwest of the United States—rivers, mountains, and prairies. Each sonic reflection (movement) combines to form a larger image, not unlike someone standing on a vista and seeing rivers, mountains, and prairies—each distinct, but part of one vast expanse. The work is scored for two versions: mixed chorus and piano, or mixed chorus, wind quintet, and string quartet. The harmonic vocabulary of the work maintains an uncomplicated, transparent (“organic”) approach in describing nature. The melodic vocabulary immediately pulls the listener's eye to the image, and rhythm is used as the underlying spark that is subtly ever changing and unpredictable. These three poetic landscapes should be performed without applause between movements.1. A Willow by the River|William Carlos Williams was a medical practitioner, pediatrician, and an avid writer. He wrote short stories, novels, plays, critical essays and, of course, poetry. The subjects of his writing were often “local” images, and he preferred to see the world “as it is,” without unnecessary trappings or “airs.” He was an important mentor to many younger poets of his day. “Willow Poem” (A Willow by the River) has no rhyme scheme but is comprised of fourteen individual lines. The willow is the focus of the poem (by its title and content) and how it never changes but will always “be.” The river represents, among other things, life quickly moving by and in a constant state of motion.2. Mountains|Marjorie Seiffert (who often used the pseudonyms Elijah Hay or Angela Cypher) led an incredibly full and balanced life. College introduced her to a world beyond her domestic and civic life and, as a result, she wanted to experience self-empowerment and independence. She prided herself in being a spouse, mother and maintaining a full slate of professional appearances and commissions for writing. Her poetry is vivid, keenly “visual,” and full of fast-paced, tightly woven ideas. “Mountain trails” (Mountains) was written at Glacier Park, Montana in September 1917.3. The Prairie|John Hay was an American statesman who was personal assistant to Abraham Lincoln. He also served as U. S. Secretary of State and Ambassador to Great Britain. He was a cultivated man of letters and wrote poetry which was straightforward in design and delivery. Nature was often the subject of his creative output. -Z. SATB choir (choir divisi) unaccompanied - Moderately Difficult - Digital Download SKU: MQ.8865-E Composed by Jessica French. Christmas. 18 pages. E. C. Schirmer Music Company - Digital #8865-E. Published by E. C. Schirmer Music Company - Digital (MQ.8865-E). UPC: 600313488658. English.Commissioned by Choral Arts Northwest, Robert Bode, director, this text focuses on the beauty of love and peace that can be found in the wondrous mystery of Christ’s birth. The bright light from the star and angels shining down on the manger is represented by the upper voices descending into clustered chords of light on the words “love came down.” The second element is a melody, initially sung by the tenors, that has a gentle, rocking motion—like that of a lullaby—representing Jesus’ mother Mary holding and rocking her child to sleep. These two themes weave together throughout the piece and finally coalesce to express the brightness of the sign that is signaled by the star and angels, as the upper voices sing the words “love divine,” painting colors of gold and white light illuminating the peaceful manger scene.

Choral Choir (SATB) - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.787250 Composed by Greg Bartholomew. Concert,Contemporary,Folk,Patriotic,Standards. Octavo. 16 pages. Burke & Bagley #49747. Published by Burke & Bagley (A0.787250). SONG OF THE MOUNTAINS is a setting for mixed (SSAATB) choir with piano accompaniment of text adapted from prose by American naturalist John Muir (1838-1914). Commissioned for the Combined Choirs of St. Joseph's School, Seattle, directed by Rick Boyle, who premiered the piece at Benaroya Hall's Nordstrom Recital Hall on May 6, 2004, in the second annual New Works New Hope concert for the benefit of Gilda's Club Seattle. The piece was revised in 2007 and the premiere of the revised score was given on November 16, 2007, by the Queens College Chorus, Cindy Bell conducting, at the Aaron Copland School of Music in New York. It was selected by the Portland Vocal Consort for their 2013 Best of the Northwest program. Duration ca. 6 minutes. Conductor Cindy Bell says, Driven by a refreshing text of American naturalist John Muir, Bartholomew has created an accessible work that flows easily through both key and meter changes, and features expressive, lyric melodies contrasted by exciting rhythmic drive. Song of the Mountains is almost cantata-like, or through-composed, in that each line of Muir's text receives equal and interesting interpretation. Occasional use of the triplet rhythm creates both a relaxing effect (grasses cease waving) and driving sense of forward motion (Vibrating!). Effective use of dynamics and interweaving of choral parts make for each section having a musical life of its own. Follow along in the score as you listen to a performance in this video:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5VVW1Ah6kqE  SONG OF THE MOUNTAINS  Climb the mountains and get their good tidings.  Nature's peace will flow into you as sunshine flows into trees. The winds will blow their freshness into you, and the storms their energy, while cares drop off like autumn leaves. Here is calm so deep, grasses cease waving. Everything in wild nature fits into us, as if truly part and parent of us.  The sun shines not on us but in us. The rivers flow not past, but through us, thrilling, tingling, vibrating every fiber and cell of the substance of our bodies, Making them glide and sing. The trees wave and the flowers bloom in our bodies as in our souls, and every bird song, wind song, and tremendous storm song of the rocks in the heart of the mountain, is our song, our very own, and sings our love.

Tenor voice solo, SATB choir unaccompanied - Medium - Digital Download SKU: MQ.8478-E Composed by John David Earnest. 12 pages. E. C. Schirmer Music Company - Digital #8478-E. Published by E. C. Schirmer Music Company - Digital (MQ.8478-E). English, Italian. The conductor of Choral Arts Northwest, Robert Bode, asked the composer to write a work based on a text about The Blessed Virgin Mary. The final poem in Petrarch's most famous work, Il Canzoniere, was chosen, because it is a prayer to the Blessed Virgin. The composer first quotes a melody by Guillaume Dufay (1397-1474,) and then continues with his own interpretation of the poem, simultaneously using both the original Italian and its English translation, and a few other references to Dufay's music. Duration: ca. 5:20A review of CANW's performance of this piece comments: Perhaps the heart of the program came with the premiere of John David Earnest’s “Vergine Bella.” This gorgeous work caught up the listener from the start, the choir softly singing the first phrases on one note, while the solo tenor came in soaring above them in a beautiful melody..
