Justin Bland’s Fanfare and Chorale for four trumpets, composed in 2014, is a playful piece combining a modern compositional style with hints of baroque elements. The three-part opening fanfare movement in B-flat major begins with a majestic figure in trumpets 1–3 set over a sixteenth note flourish in trumpet 4. While the more lyrical middle section moves to the relative minor, hinting at the coming chorale in the final movement, the movement ends in the same stately character as the opening.In the closing chorale movement, the chorale tune, composed by Bland, is divided between the players in the first section; here, each phrase is stated by an open trumpet and punctuated with a muted trumpet. The melody is then set in long notes above lively sixteenth note passages inspired by the opening fanfare. The work ends with a final harmonized version of the chorale that interjects sixteenth note figures from earlier in the moment.While conceived for four B-flat trumpets, the piece can easily be performed on C trumpets (as written) if desired, or even on four horns.

The musical expression of this musical tableau (duration ca. 11 min.) mainly refers to the 3rd verse of the chorale text Trotz dem alten Drachen (I defy the old dragon) illustrating the fight with the dragon in a toccata style in the center of the piece. The opening passages have the chorale melody c. f. in the tenor and slowly build up an agitated mood. In a calm middle section in a Siciliano metre the chorale occurs in the major variant. The corresponding chorale text passage of the 3rd verse is Ich steh hier und singe in gar sichrer Ruh (I stand here and sing in secure peace). After the dramatic climax a calm variation closes the tableau.

The first theme resembles a melody of the ancient church; the melody has a mystical quality depicting God's majesty. The transition is light in content as it gives a listener a break from the serious mood of the first theme. The second theme is a chorale and is chordal in texture; it resembles a church hymn sung in many churches. Moreover, the second theme is written in B Flat Major, depicting one's praising God in spirit; the general mood is quiet. Following that section is the transition that gradually builds up excitement before the restatement of the first theme. The second theme is restated in E Major, but its longer note values are placed over the repeated bass and chordal patterns, a style that many composers use in their works, including Igor Stravinsky's L'Histoire Du Soldat. Once again, the lighthearted transitional passage recurs before the chimes start to strike four times. Following the chimes, the chorale is stated in E Major and begins quietly and builds up power as the work nears its ending; the chorale, unlike its first statement depicts the singing of praise with joy. This piece may be performed in concert halls and churches; it could give people fond memories of recitalists who enjoy bringing excitement to the public.
