Brass Ensemble Horn,Trombone,Trumpet,Tuba - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.931264 Composed by Johann Sebastian Bach. Arranged by Alessandro MacrƬ. Baroque,Christmas,Instructional,Sacred. Score and parts. 43 pages. Music Macri Editions #5805697. Published by Music Macri Editions (A0.931264). The Christmas Oratorio (German: Weihnachts-Oratorium), BWV 248, is an oratorio by Johann Sebastian Bach intended for performance in church during the Christmas season. It was written for the Christmas season of 1734 and incorporates music from earlier compositions, including three secular cantatas written during 1733 and 1734 and a largely lost church cantata, BWV 248a. The date is confirmed in Bach's autograph manuscript. The next performance was not until 17 December 1857 by the Sing-Akademie zu Berlin under Eduard Grell. The Christmas Oratorio is a particularly sophisticated example of parody music. The author of the text is unknown, although a likely collaborator was Christian Friedrich Henrici (Picander). The work belongs to a group of three oratorios written in 1734 and 1735 for major feasts, the other two works being the Ascension Oratorio (BWV 11) and the Easter Oratorio (BWV 249). All three of these oratorios to some degree parody earlier compositions. The Christmas Oratorio is by far the longest and most complex work of the three. The Christmas Oratorio is in six parts, each part being intended for performance on one of the major feast days of the Christmas period. The piece is often presented as a whole or split into two equal parts. The total running time for the entire work is nearly three hours. The first part (for Christmas Day) describes the Birth of Jesus, the second (for December 26) the annunciation to the shepherds, the third (for December 27) the adoration of the shepherds, the fourth (for New Year's Day) the circumcision and naming of Jesus, the fifth (for the first Sunday after New Year) the journey of the Magi, and the sixth (for Epiphany) the adoration of the Magi.

Choral Choir (SSA) - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.768516 Composed by Camille Saint-Saens. Arranged by Roar Kvam. Christian,Christmas,Romantic Period. Octavo. 144 pages. KVAMusic Edition #6078593. Published by KVAMusic Edition (A0.768516). Charles-Camille Saint-SaĆ«ns (9 October 1835-16 December 1921) was a French composer, organist, conductor and pianist. He was a musical prodigy and made his concert debut at the age of ten. After studying at the Paris Conservatoire he followed a conventional career as a church organist, first at Saint-Merri, Paris and, from 1858, La Madeleine, the official church of the French Empire. After leaving the post twenty years later, he was a successful freelance pianist and composer, in demand in Europe and the Americas. As a young man, Saint-SaĆ«ns was enthusiastic for the most modern music of the day, particularly that of Schumann, Liszt and Wagner, although his own compositions were generally within a conventional classical tradition. He was a scholar of musical history, and remained committed to the structures worked out by earlier French composers. This brought him into conflict in his later years with composers of the impressionist and dodecaphonic schools of music; although there were neoclassical elements in his music, foreshadowing works by Stravinsky and Les Six, he was often regarded as a reactionary in the decades around the time of his death. He wrote the Oratorio de NoĆ«l (Christmas Oratorio) at the end of the 1850s and completed it in 1860. The first performanse was at the church La Madeleine in Paris December 1869. The work is dedicated to A Madame la Vicomtesse de Grandval. The work is originally scored for five soloists, soprano, mezzo-soprano, alto, tenor and baritone, mixed choir (except no. 4 which is for SSAA), harp, organ and strings (in this edition the choir has been transcribed for a SSAA choir). Texts in the Oratorio de NoĆ«l is drawn from the Old and New Testaments: (1. Instrumental).    2. Luke 2,8-14.   3. Psalm 39,1.   4. John 11.27.   5. Psalm 117, 26-28.   6. Large Ensemble - Level 5 - Digital Download SKU: A0.553809 Composed by Johann Sebastian Bach. Arranged by Ray Thompson. Baroque,Christmas,Sacred. Score and parts. 21 pages. RayThompsonMusic #4762509. Published by RayThompsonMusic (A0.553809). The well known Sinfonia Pastoral comes from the second part of Bach's Christmas Oratorio. It is scored for 2 flutes, 2 oboe d'amore, 2 oboe da caccia, strings, continuoI have added natural horns in G. ( Horns in F are provided as well)Bach uses the  4 oboes to indicate the shepherds, as a counter melody to that of the strings.I have used the 2 oboes and  bassoon 1 as the mainstay of the oboe quartet and given the sustained notes played by Bach's 4th oboe to horn or clarinet. This keeps the counter melody on the double reed instruments, and gives a fair refection of Bach's original.Flutes, clarinets and bassoon2 play the original string parts.Arranged  here for double wind quintet and bass.
