Choral Choir (SATB) - Level 2 - Digital Download

SKU: A0.841364

Composed by Felix Bartholdy Mendelssohn, Samuel Arnold, and William H. Cummings. Arranged by Michele Galvagno. Christian,Christmas,Praise & Worship,Sacred. Octavo. 18 pages. Artistic Score Engraving di Galvagno Michele #6098157. Published by Artistic Score Engraving di Galvagno Michele (A0.841364).

This year's Christmas publication choice fell on a song very dear to me: Hark! The herald angels sing. The text, inspired by Luke’s Gospel (2:14), appears for the first time in a collection of Christmas carols called Hymns and Sacred Poems in 1739, jointly written by Charles Wesley (1707-1788 ) and George Whitefield (1714-1770), two of the founding members of the Methodist movement.

The version we know today is the one adapted by William H. Cummings (1831-1915) from the section Vaterland, in deinen Gauen of the Festgesang zum Gutenbergfest, WoO 9, by Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy (1809-1847). The story, however, is more complex and articulated than that.

The original version of the text, written by Wesley, bearing the title Hymn for Christmas-Day, had received only slow and solemn music for its verses, music now almost completely discarded. Also, his original opening lines were Hark! How all the welkin rings / Glory to the King of Kings .

The version that has been passed to us is the result of alterations made by different hands, especially those of Whitefield, who changed the initial couplet into the one we know today.

In 1840-one hundred years after the publication of Hymns and sacred Poems-Mendelssohn composed a cantata commemorating Johann Gutenberg’s invention of movable-type printing. The English musician William H. Cummings finally adapted Mendelssohn’s music around 1855 in order to fit the music to the verses and give it its present look.

In this edition we propose the version that every listener expects to hear when reading the title on the programme and, immediately after, one of the few original versions that have reached us in their entirety, that is the one set to music by Samuel Arnold (1740-1802) and available today in The British Minstrel, and Musical and Literary Miscellany, vol. 3, published in 1843.

The proposed instrumentations are those of the classical string quartet and the cello quartet. Both variants are very simple to perform and are certainly suitable for small string ensembles formed in musical schools. In the cello quartet version, the only relatively complex part is that of the first cello, which should be left to the teacher or to a student able to play up to the 7th position without excessive troubles.

I hope this music can bring you the serenity that made me prepare it.

Cello Duet Cello - Level 3 - Digital Download

SKU: A0.589815

By John Denver. By David Leslie Froggatt, Jane Barnes, and Johnny Marks. Arranged by David McKeown. Children,Christmas,Country,Holiday,Rock. Score. 4 pages. David McKeown #6096187. Published by David McKeown (A0.589815).

This version of Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer is arranged by David McKeown as a duet for two Cellos.

The song, Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, was written in 1949 by Johhny Marks. The Rudolph story was written by Marks’ brother-in-law, Robert L May, a decade earlier. The success of the song was guaranteed when it was recorded by Gene Autry, a huge star at the time. Initially Gene Autry didn’t like the song and was only persuaded to record it by his wife. She obviously knew best as Rudolph went on to become the second best-selling Christmas record of all time after White Christmas, with versions by everyone from the Jackson Five to Alvin and the Chipmunks.

This duet version of Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer is based on the Gene Autry version, with a short introduction, and three choruses of the melody, with a key change and varied accompaniment throughout. Rhythms are simple in a swing style and the range is conservative, so this arrangement is ideal for players at an intermediate level. SKU: A0.841368

Composed by English Traditional. Arranged by Michele Galvagno. Christian,Christmas,Gospel,Praise & Worship,Sacred. Score and parts. 20 pages. Artistic Score Engraving di Galvagno Michele #6636597. Published by Artistic Score Engraving di Galvagno Michele (A0.841368).

This year’s Christmas publication is God Rest You Merry, Gentlemen, one of the oldest carols of the English tradition, in two versions: for string quartet and for cello quartet. The source for this edition has been the choral part found in Christmas Carols New & Old, edited by John Stainer (1840–1901) and firstly published by Novello & Co around the year 1880.

The proposed edition consists of two separate full scores, one for string quartet and one for cello quartet, both accompanied by a full set of performance material. I have decided to keep the string quartet version in the original key of E minor, while I have transposed the cello quartet version down a whole step to account for the better resonance the key of D minor gives on cellos, and to keep the highest note of the first cello in range of the first thumb position. The separate parts for the cello quartet versions bear fingering and bowing suggestions by myself.

I hope you will enjoy playing this piece with your friends, family, and students as much as I have enjoyed researching and adapting it.

I wish you a Merry Christmas and a time of joy, peace, and rest with all your dear ones.

God rest you merry, Gentlemen

SKU: A0.998537

Composed by Adolphe-Charles Adam. Arranged by Scott Fields Davis. Christmas,Easter,Sacred. Octavo. 31 pages. Scott Fields Davis #6560385. Published by Scott Fields Davis (A0.998537).

O holy night by Adolphe Charles Adam, in my opinion, is easily one of the most beautiful and moving of all the Christmas carols. This arrangement has the chorus that we all know and love, with a few subtle changes. In this version, the accompaniment (played by two cellos) is stripped down to its essentials. Revealing its simplistic excellence. Lastly, each verse is written out with its own individual line of music. Making the text easier to read, it's no longer necessary to determine which one the four verses (usually stacked on top of one another) to sing.

Approximate duration is 9 minutes and 46 seconds.
