While many people are familiar with the melodic tune by Richard Storrs Willis, a different setting of the beloved Christmas carol was written by another composer Arthur Sullivan (of Gilbert and Sullivanfame). These two melodies have become intertwined and partnered into this arrangement. Beginning with the Willis melody then followed by the Sullivan, the key change brings both melodies together seemingly acting as countermelodies at times to each other. This lyrical arrangement will bring a renewed spirit to your Christmas celebrations.

Mountains are naturally beautiful especially at sunrise and sunset where the sun seems to change the color at their summits.  This phenomenon may only last a short time twice a day, but it it worthwhile to see.  To be on the mountaintop when this occurs is like living in a painting.  This song captures the artistry and sensations of living in these moments.  A lone lyrical melody begins the work, adding supporting harmonies afterward.  The melody evolves into a folk-like structure that returns to its ominous original.  The driving winds and cold weather are further illustrated in the transition leading to recapitulations of the previous sections.  With quiet respite the work effortlessly floats away, seeemingly into the air.

Laudate! is a celebratory work of excitement and praise. After its boisterous opening, the energy of the song takes off with differing motifs and rhythmic figures in each voice before the chorus unites in large, harmonic textures.  The anticipation builds again before returning to the polyphonic section from before. The work slightly slows down, while maintaining its energetic spirit, creating polychordal harmonies. The uptempo energy comes back once more and builds through the key change and rollicking finale (similar to the beginning).  Each voice section gets featured in this work, and would be a great opener at your next concert.  This work is suitable for advanced high school, collegiate, and community choruses.
