'The City of Manaus' incorporates various musical elements such as multimetre time signatures and vast tambral exploration to represent a chase through the Amazon Jungle. The driving pulse, short note lengths and quick tempo reflect an action-packed chase. This climaxes before a reduction in texture - exploring of the tone colours of the woodwinds, and brass, representative of the birds and pristine environment of the natural world. The tension then grows as the texture thickens before the chase resumes, racing once again through the jungle. The 'City of Manaus' is located deep within the Amazon in Northern Brazil. The actual town was founded in 1693 but the history of colonisation of the area begun in 1499 after the Spanish discovered the mouth of the Amazon River. Being the largest city in the Amazon, Manaus is the centre of life in the region, and the namesake of this piece arises from the way this city seems to be the beacon of humanity in a totally natural landscape. Written for Concert Band, this piece is one which takes the listener on a journey to the depths of the Amazon rainforest to find the 'City of Manaus'. It is suitable for Highschool aged students and professional groups alike and can be performed with flexible instrumentation due to doubling in numerous parts. Grade 2.5-3.

It begins with the launch and all of the dangers and excitement of the ascent. Resistance is met while trying to escape Earth's gravity before finally reaching orbit. Space is beautiful and its majesty and wonder is reflected in the music. The conclusion depicts the reentering of Earth's orbit and the final descent to splashdown. I envisioned this piece to be more of a tone painting than a programmatic work, though I'm sure it would work just fine to have a video of a space launch projected in the background of your performance!Escape Velocity was commission by the Kansas Bandmasters Association, Dennis Kerr, President, and was premiered on July 19th, 2013 by theKBAMiddle Level Honor Band with Richard Saucedo conducting.

The Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols at the King's College Chapel Cambridge has begun its Christmas Eve service of this carol, since 1919, as the Processional hymn. According to tradition, the soloist of this carol is chosen on the day of the performance. It was the first recoding that the King's College Choir made for EMI in 1948. Nine New York City Miniatures (2020) oboe solo began with Movement 7,  A Million Numbered Streets.  A Million Numbered Streets was originally conceived for a Vox Novus Composers Voice 15 Minutes of Fame call for scores for a one minute oboe solo piece, specifically themed from New York City, New York.  In preparation, Nash discovered nearly 1,000 songs dedicated to NYC. Many of those were titled after numbered streets, hence Nash’s title A Million Numbered Streets. Nash’s creation employs a medium-fast highly syncopated song-like melody, alluding to a restless and busy NYC street. In an attempt to make A Million Numbered Streets more marketable, Nash decided to compose 8 additional miniatures around it.  The 8 complementary miniatures are all approximately 1 minute in length and alternating fast tempo and slow tempo movements.  There are no direct quotes from other songs; however, 3 of the movements are derived from and inspired by New York City related songs.  Movement #4, Downtown Music was inspired by the song Downtown by Tony Hatch (made popular by Petula Clark’s vocals).  Movement #8, Success is based on the song New York, New York by John Kander (best known for Frank Sinatra singing it).  The title Success was inspired by the phrase If I can make it there, I’ll make it anywhere.  Movement #9, Uptown Music is derived from the song Uptown Girl by Billy Joel. In addition, the title Spreading the News for movement 1, as well as that for movement 6, Vagabond Shoes are also phrases from the song New York, New York.
