Rumberos sing semi-improvised melodies over the Rumba clave rhythm with other percussion added, and the accompanying dance is an integral part of the performance. The rhythms of Cuban Rumba have travelled all over the world, providing the foundations for Son and Salsa and the ballroom Rhumba among many other styles. If you play to an intermediate standard and upwards, then you and your audience will enjoy this piece. The steady clave rhythm is implied throughout, and following the precise articulation in the score will help convey the style of the Rumba. Melodies are clearly articulated and played with passion. For many traditional Klezmer tunes, the first clues of their existence comes from bands making discs at the dawn of the recording era. In this case, Odessa Bulgar first appeared in a 1919 recording by Abe Schwartz’s Orchestra. Schwartz was born in Romania and emigrated to the USA around 1900, thereafter enjoying a long career in the music industry. Odessa Bulgar is a happy piece designed for dancing at celebrations. Odessa Bulgar is simply arranged in a key and range best suited to the instruments. The melody is in three sections; overall the tune is played twice with a coda and with constant variations in the accompaniment. This version is arranged as a duet in a Jazz Swing style for one Clarinet and one Bass Clarinet. The melody of Away in a Manger, Cradle Song was written by William J Kirkpatrick, an Irish born American composer. The origins of the lyrics are less certain. Throughout the nineteenth century they were attributed to Martin Luther, but this version of events has since been discredited.
