Four Early Jazz Classics from the USA for Brass Quintet includes: 1)Little Brown Jug:It was originally a drinking song. It remained well known as a folk song into the early 20th century. Like many songs which make reference to alcohol, it enjoyed new popularity during the Prohibition era. In 1939, bandleader Glenn Miller recorded and broadcast his swing instrumental arrangement of the tune with great success, and the number became one of the best known orchestrations of the American Big Band era. 2)Frankie & Johnny:Frankie and Johnny (sometimes spelled Frankie and Johnnie; also known as Frankie and Albert or just Frankie) is a traditional American popular song. It tells the story of a woman, Frankie, who finds that her man Johnny was making love to another woman and shoots him dead. Frankie is then arrested; in some versions of the song she is also executed. 3)Tin Roof Blues:Tin Roof Blues is a jazz composition by the New Orleans Rhythm Kings first recorded in 1923. It was written by band members Paul Mares, Ben Pollack, Mel Stitzel, George Brunies and Leon Roppolo. The tune has become a jazz standard and is one of the most recorded and often played New Orleans jazz compositions. 4)Battle Hymn of the Republic:The Battle Hymn of the Republic, also known as Mine Eyes Have Seen the Glory outside of the United States, is a song by American writer Julia Ward Howe using the music from the song John Brown’s Body. Howe’s more famous lyrics were written in November 1861, and first published in The Atlantic Monthly in February 1862. The song links the judgment of the wicked at the end of time (Old Testament, Isaiah 63; New Testament, Rev. 19) with the American Civil War. Since that time, it has become an extremely popular and well-known American patriotic song. This piece attempts to put the Key Stage 2 or Key Stage 3 budding musician into the musical world of the Marvel Cinematic Universe or other similar big budget sci-fi action adventure films. Combining motor ostinati with contextually more adventurous accompanying harmony my aim is to move the musical learning away from the sometimes twee and undemanding into something with a little more musical bite. This orchestration of the piece includes parts for what I have come to know as a ‘mixed ability school ensemble’ i.e. a selection of instruments that you might typically find being taught in high schools both in London and nationally. The idea behind this was to put primary school musicians alongside older (sometimes as much as 10 years older) musicians from high schools to act both as inspiration and role models. 'AsCent’ for mixed ability school ensemble was first performed on Saturday 1st July 2017 by 76 musicians including 34 primary school children from the London Borough of Brent under the baton of the composer.

Entry of the Gladiators is probably the best known work by Czech composer Julius Fucik (1872-1916) – primarily because of its adoption as an upbeat ‘screamer’ march, heralding the arrival of circus clowns.  In fact, Fucik’s original title for the work was Grande Marche Chromatique, because the piece makes frequent use of chromatic passages.  He later substituted Entry of the Gladiators because of a personal interest in Roman history.  Fucik intended the work to be played at a standard march tempo, though it is generally performed significantly faster in the ‘clowns’ context!This arrangement for duo of B-flat clarinet and bassoon has been classed as 'advanced intermediate' as, although it can be attempted by players of ABRSM Grade 4 - 5 standard, it takes more experienced musicians to do it full justice.

The Death of Ã…se was originally composed as part of the incidental music for Ibsen’s play Peer Gynt.  Over 10 years later, Grieg selected certain elements from this work, organising these into two orchestral suites.  The Death of Ã…se features in the first suite, Op. 46, along with Morning, Anitra’s Dance and In the Hall of the Mountain King. Ã…se is the mother of Peer Gynt.  When her son absconds with the daughter of an affluent local farmer, Ã…se sacrifices everything to pay the penalties on his behalf and, left destitute, dies of poverty and illness.  Cheery stuff!Although fairly straightforward in terms of notes and rhythms, this piece has been classed as 'intermediate' as it requires good intonation and ensemble skills to perform effectively.

It is thought to date from some time in 1800s from near the city of Culmore, but not much else is known. The city of Culmore was a center for emigration and the lyrics of the song discuss a young man and the search for his love who had moved to America. This version is arranged for 12-bell ensemble by Mark R Lewis for the AGEHR 2022 Composing Masterclass. If played by a quintet or sextet, the piece is simply a matter of counting and keeping track of the melody but if this is played as a trio or quartet, the arrangement will be quite challenging with many instances of a player switching between melody and accompaniment parts multiple times a measure.

Mozart's Piano Concerto No. 24 in C Minor, K. 491, was composed in 1975 for Dillon Ford's personal use as soloist in performances at Florida International University. Since no Mozart cadenza survives for this, perhaps the most romantic of all the Mozart concertos, he consciously set out to create his own cadenza in a kind of hybrid style that is as much redolent of the Viennese Ländler as it is of the Brahms waltzes. Nor did he hesitate to introduce such stylistically advanced features as the concluding double trills, which are virtually unknown in Mozart's keyboard compositions. He believes the result is a concise but effective classico-romantic cadenza in quasi-improvisatory style well suited to its original purpose. He offers it to the pianist who is seeking musically engaging material that has as yet been little heard during public performances of what is perhaps Mozart's greatest contribution to the piano concerto genre.
