Everything evolves out of an initial phrase and quickly transforms into new shapes and forms as the piece continues. Point of Origin is an example of post-tonal triadicism in that it does not adhere to traditional tonal rules and yet makes consistent use of triadic harmonies. The resulting sound is one that is familiar to most listeners and yet still provides unexpected twists and turns. Warren Hatch, written during his undergraduate study at Campbell University. Each movement is distinct, in that each of them is composed in a different form, utilizes different key changes and scales, and takes influence from a different period in classical music. While there is no theme that connects them to one another, they are all in the key of E Major and consist mostly of a waltz-like feeling. I. Remembrance of a Dream is the first movement, characterised by its sonata form and distinct, contrasting sections. The piece paints a story of dancing lovers before they are forced to give their final goodbyes.

My Variations on St. Christopher (Beneath the Cross of Jesus) require a wide range of technical prowess from relatively easy (Variation II) to advanced (Variation VII).  The Theme presents the unadorned hymn tune with an original 4-part harmonization.  Variation I is another 4-part setting but with a more rhythmically active acompaniment in the lower voices.  Variation II, a duo for the hands alone, is in the dominant key where the tune is accompanied by an unrelenting stream of triplets.  Variation III is a 3-voice canon in which the tenor and pedal bass imitate the soprano, though with a certain amount of intervallic freedom.  Variation IV is a trio in which the middle voice presents an ornamented version of the hymn tune.  Variation V is a brief fughetta, while Variation VI presents the tune in the pedals against quietly undulating triplets in the hands.  The final variation (entitled Introduction and Fugal Fantasy) is by far the most challenging and employs considerable chromaticism toward the end.  I have provided a full-length recording to aid the prospective buyer in the decision-making process.  I encourage you to search the Sheet Music Plus or the Sheet Music Direct website for other hymn arrangememts of mine, some for organ and others for piano.

He began studying piano at an early age and went on to be the first black American to graduate from Oberlin Conservatory of Music.  Throughout his career he worked as a composer, organist, pianist, choral director and music professor; he received many awards for his music and writing and spent a period at the Fontainebleau School of Music south of Paris where he studied with Nadia Boulanger.  Dett became well known for incorporating tunes and and elements of African American folk songs and spirituals into classical music.Cave of the Winds was composed in 1902 whilst Dett was living in Niagara Falls, NY and was first published the same year. The title refers to a natural cavern behind a waterfall at Niagara Falls which existed until 1955.

I’ve suggested that this piece grows in volume throughout the 3 verses that I’ve arranged, and to support this, the number of notes each part has gradually increases, so that the notes have less time to die away before they are replaced. So part of the build in volume happens automagically!There are no page turns. The soundfile alongside the score is from the 3rd verse where you can hear that the sound is becoming busy and powerful. Guitar 6 requires the bottom string tuned down to D. I hope you enjoy playing this piece!

The text ‘O holy city, seen of John,’ is commonly associated with this tune. The text contrasts the grim realities of early 20th Century cities with the idyllic Holy City, described by John in the Book of Revelation. The darkness of this vision is well-captured by the minor mode and relentless 4/4 rhythm of the original tune. These features are amplified in this prelude and fugue, particularly the inherently chromatic nature of the minor mode. This is an unrelentingly dark work that builds to an immense climax.Technical note: this is a demanding work that requires superior technical ability.
