Rachmaninov's beautiful All-night Vigil (aka Songs of the Church) is rarely performed because of its level of difficulty, language, and length. The music is transcendent and perfectly suited for celebrations of the Presentation of the Lord (February 2), evening prayer, and funerals. This selection, No. 5 of 15 in the work, is taken from the 1920 English translation by Winfred Douglas and is well-suited as a solo piece. The choral parts were easily translated into an accompaniment on organ, although piano can be used. The movement is transposed down a minor third and is suited for a tenor (the original solo voice called for in the work) or soprano. This arrangement is also available in Bb minor (original key) and E minor for lower voices. This piece would also work as a unison choir piece.

This intense setting of the Martin Luther (1483-1546) hymn AUS TIEFER NOT was originally composed for organ by Bach as a part of his Clavier-Ãœbung III (Keyboard Practice III). It is a unique six-part setting in which four voices are played by the hands and two by the feet. Bach places the melody of the hymn in the top pedal part. Scored for two trumpets, French horn, two trombones, Euphonium, and Tuba, this arrangement for Brass Choir places the chorale melody (cantus firmus) in the Trombone 2 part. This part can be doubled by a French horn so that the hymn tune stands out from the thick polyphony. The original setting has been transposed down a major third. He began studying piano at an early age and went on to be the first black American to graduate from Oberlin Conservatory of Music.  Throughout his career he worked as a composer, organist, pianist, choral director and music professor; he received many awards for his music and writing and spent a period at the Fontainebleau School of Music south of Paris where he studied with Nadia Boulanger.  Dett became well known for incorporating tunes and and elements of African American folk songs and spirituals into classical music.Cave of the Winds was composed in 1902 whilst Dett was living in Niagara Falls, NY and was first published the same year. The title refers to a natural cavern behind a waterfall at Niagara Falls which existed until 1955.

They are a contemporary arrangement of selected movements from the Five Wind Divertimentos for 3 basset horns, K. 439b which Mozart wrote in 1783.The Divertimentos are notable for their conciseness of form and their melodic richness. (Each divertimento has 5 movements.)They therefore make an excellent introduction to Mozart's piano music, even though they are not completely typical of Mozart's piano writing. We do not know for certain who made the arrangement, but Alexander Weinmann has shown that it was probably Ferdinand Kauer. I've changed the key slightly so the music fits the guitar neck better and the modulation in the reprise is in a familiar key for the players.The music rises and falls as the song progresses, making the dynamics happen almost automatically. The text contrasts the grim realities of early 20th Century cities with the idyllic Holy City, described by John in the Book of Revelation. The darkness of this vision is well-captured by the minor mode and relentless 4/4 rhythm of the original tune. These features are amplified in this prelude and fugue, particularly the inherently chromatic nature of the minor mode. This is an unrelentingly dark work that builds to an immense climax.Technical note: this is a demanding work that requires superior technical ability.
