Randolph Hall (A0.483391). This is a result of the inspiration from M.C. Escher's 1951 work by the same name. The concepts of relatvity, repetition and inter-dimensionality are addressed in a quasi-minimalist style in this famous art work. The interval of thirds creats the image of the wentelteefje (Escher's fictitious creatures) going up and down stairs at all angles. In section F, the wentelteefje curl up and roll away, after their climbing of stairs. Vox 1 & 2 are mirrors of each other and simulate sine waves (red) except for the bridge material before each section. Likewise, for Vox 3 & 4 (blue), mirror and simulate cosine waves. Vox 5& 6 mirror and are my best attempt to simulate tangents. Vox 7 provides a bass and backdrop for the scene.

They are a contemporary arrangement of movements from the Five Wind Divertimentos for 3 basset horns, K. 439b which Mozart wrote in 1783.The Divertimentos are notable for their conciseness of form and their melodic richness. Each divertimento has 5 mvts.They therefore make an excellent introduction to Mozart's piano music, even though they are not completely typical of Mozart's piano writing. We do not know for certain who made the arrangement, but Alexander Weinmann has shown that it was probably Ferdinand Kauer. The order of movements is not the same as in the original; moreover, some of the Trios have been exchanged and recapitulations have been shortened in some instances.Thry are in varying keys, unlike the original divertimenti, so my arrangements reflect thus.This is my arrangement for wind quintet of Sonatina No.2 in A major.The original 3 parts have been reallocated around the quintet, with some octave and harmony additions.I have added an original natural horn part for a more authentic Mozart sound.There are 4 movements: Allegro Menuetto and Trio Adagio Rondo

For James: a kind of lullaby (1993)Built in 1898 the James Monaghan Mansion--now, and since 1942 the home of Gonzaga University's music department--was for many years believed to be haunted. In addition to reports of disembodied footsteps, doors dramatically opening themselves, and sudden appearances of hostile presences, there was also reports of the organ playing itself......which is where I, primarily an organ student at the time, spent a majority of my time. This piece was written entirely at the organ, on that organ while an organ and piano student at Gonzaga. Written in four layers as if for organ, in the end I found that it sounded much better on the piano. It has never been performed or recorded on organ.The working title was Excorsising Monaghan.  The finished piece sounded less ghostly and more like a lullaby. Whether or not it was James doing the haunting, I thought it best to offer the lullaby to him.--Bill Whitley, 2023.

My Variations on St. Christopher (Beneath the Cross of Jesus) require a wide range of technical prowess from relatively easy (Variation II) to advanced (Variation VII).  The Theme presents the unadorned hymn tune with an original 4-part harmonization.  Variation I is another 4-part setting but with a more rhythmically active acompaniment in the lower voices.  Variation II, a duo for the hands alone, is in the dominant key where the tune is accompanied by an unrelenting stream of triplets.  Variation III is a 3-voice canon in which the tenor and pedal bass imitate the soprano, though with a certain amount of intervallic freedom.  Variation IV is a trio in which the middle voice presents an ornamented version of the hymn tune.  Variation V is a brief fughetta, while Variation VI presents the tune in the pedals against quietly undulating triplets in the hands.  The final variation (entitled Introduction and Fugal Fantasy) is by far the most challenging and employs considerable chromaticism toward the end.  I have provided a full-length recording to aid the prospective buyer in the decision-making process.  I encourage you to search the Sheet Music Plus or the Sheet Music Direct website for other hymn arrangememts of mine, some for organ and others for piano.

This new arrangement of La Chasse allows flutists to perform this work in public as a concerto. It is a wonderful addition to the flute concerto repertoire making this virtuosic showpiece available for competitions and orchestra concerts alike! The piano accompaniment has been carefully arranged idiomatically for string orchestra parts are simple enough to be played well by school and student orchestras. Rachmaninov's beautiful All-night Vigil (aka Songs of the Church) is rarely performed because of its level of difficulty, language, and length. The music is transcendent and perfectly suited for celebrations of the Presentation of the Lord (February 2), evening prayer, and funerals. This selection, No. 5 of 15 in the work, is taken from the 1920 English translation by Winfred Douglas and is well-suited as a solo piece. The choral parts were easily translated into an accompaniment on organ, although piano can be used. The movement is transposed down a fifth and is suited for an alto or bass. This arrangement is also available in Bb minor (original key) and G minor for higher voices. This piece would also work as a unison choir piece.
