Despite the poem’s specific setting in Civil War era USA, its theme is universal: the mourning of all soldiers who have died in battle, regardless of their allegiances.Ashes of Soldiers is dedicated to my father, Alan James Eatock, who was a soldier at one point in his life, and who passed away in 2010.

A rare revisit to Sousa’s medley march days, this march features Stephen Foster’s Come Where My Love Lies Dreaming and Ethelbert Nevin’s Narcissus. This unpublished march could have been called “Homage to Nevin and Foster�, “Homage to Pittsburgh�, or “The Belle of Pittsburgh�.It is one of Sousa’s more unusual works, but highly inventive. His combination of themes is well executed and builds throughout to a triumphant conclusion. A quite difficult one to arrange!This Brass Quintet arrangement was made using “The President’s Own� United States Marine Band’s The Complete Marches of John Philip Sousa score as found at https://www.marineband.marines.mil/Audio-Resources/The-Complete-Marches-of-John-Philip-Sousa/. The order of movements is not the same as in the original; moreover, some of the Trios have been exchanged and recapitulations have been shortened in some instances.This is my arrangement for wind quintet of Viennese Sonatina No.1 in CThe original 3 parts have been reallocated around the quintet, with some octave and harmony additions.I have added an original natural horn part for a more authentic Mozart sound.

The text ‘O holy city, seen of John,’ is commonly associated with this tune. The text contrasts the grim realities of early 20th Century cities with the idyllic Holy City, described by John in the Book of Revelation. The darkness of this vision is well-captured by the minor mode and relentless 4/4 rhythm of the original tune. These features are amplified in this prelude and fugue, particularly the inherently chromatic nature of the minor mode. This is an unrelentingly dark work that builds to an immense climax.Technical note: this is a demanding work that requires superior technical ability.
